Adblock Plus and (a little) more

Adblock Plus 1.1 released · 2009-07-14 18:47 by Wladimir Palant

Install Adblock Plus 1.1

Major changes

  • “Block” tab on Flash and Java is no longer permanently visible
  • Diagnostics page under chrome://adblockplus/content/errors.html
  • Handling of HTTP redirects
  • Blocking entire domains with filters like ||example.com^
  • Domain exceptions in element hiding rules
  • Performance and memory use improvements

Detailed changelog

Known issues

  • Thunderbird: When clicking “Subscribe” in the subscription list on first run, the entire Thunderbird window is closed. This should be fixed in Thunderbird soon (bug 503299).
  • SeaMonkey: Toolbar icon looks ugly with the Modern theme. Modern theme doesn’t seem to consider the possibility of extensions, using it with Adblock Plus isn’t recommended.
  • Some translations contain untranslated English strings.

Great job. Thank you. BTW, it really does seem faster on my netbook (FF 3.5, XP).

After the update ABP seems to be broken. No filtering, no blocking. All the ad is visible.

  6. binzi81 · 2009-07-15 10:49 · #

Problem only occurs with FoxyProxy 2.13 installed.

    ABP 1.1
    FoxyProxy 2.13
    FF 3.0.11

    Deactivating Foxyproxy resolves the problem.

    firefox ver.3.5 o/s xp home. adblock ver.1.1
after installing latest version of firefox, adblock plus no longer works properly. e.g. when i go to nytimes.com ABP color green, even though setting on enable adblock plus. have problem on several other news sites. have removed & reinstalled both adblock and firefox several times & still have problem.

    Reply from Wladimir Palant:

The green icon means that Adblock Plus is disabled on this particular site. You probably have some filter that disables it, easiest way to “fix” this is right-clicking on the NYTimes page and choosing “Adblock Plus: Re-enable on this page” from the context menu. If you are interested in what that filter is and where it comes from: https://adblockplus.org/en/getting_started#false-positives

After updating Adblock Plus yesterday, it no longer seems to work. It is enabled, but ads are being displayed.

I have Firefox version 3.5, and I have installed the Delicious, IE Tab, and Session Manager add-ons.

apparently this man who went on vacation is the only one in the company who can answer our problem. telling us to click on the “ABP” just does not work the way it should on several sites that i have been useing for a very long time.

Thank you for AdBlock !!! You save us about half of time and traffic ! God bless you !

  11. ariel · 2009-07-16 14:11 · #

It’s the only extension I will take with my to a deserted island.

    Thank you.

  12. Jota.Ce · 2009-07-16 15:57 · #

    NICE !!!

It also works with SeaMonkey 2.1a1pre (the only extension i have working with it).

  13. Stevie · 2009-07-16 22:34 · #

    YEP, v1.1 is completely broken.
Well it worked for a day or so but now I’m seeing those unwanted ads.
I first noticed the red icon on both status bar & taskbar, I normally only have it on taskbar. And I can’t change it !
No matter how many times I enable ABP it doesn’t stay stuck.
Right-click context menu does not show ABP in it.
clicking AdblockPlus Preferences on tools menu ….. does nothing.
Opening options shows no filters and cannot add any filters or subscriptions.
And NO I DON’T have Thunderbird.
Where are the current filters & subscriptions stored ?
I can only find ones from 2008. :-(

Please provide a link to version 1.0.2 for SeaMonkey 1.1.x users.

  16. Ares2 · 2009-07-17 18:21 · #

    @Elizabeth, raggy and Stevie

Can you please disable all your other extensions for testing purpose and check if that fixes your issues?

seems a more explicit filter works faster and fixed my problem

  18. Stevie · 2009-07-18 05:05 · #

    @Ares2
    will get round to that.

In order to verify it’s a version specific bug I’ve gone back to v1.02 (which I had in my last FEBE backup dir) and it’s working perfectly again.
As the original bug took a day or two to manifest I’m going to wait before attempting add-on conflict detection.
    :-)

Great extension, I have only one complaint and that is the fact that there’s no option to make the block tabs on flash and java permanent again.

  20. Smurfy · 2009-07-19 19:58 · #

Some ads are starting to get through ABP after this update, I’m worried.

  21. Anon · 2009-07-22 21:59 · #

ABP 1.1 not blocking anything on Firefox 3.5. Please fix!!

  22. strel · 2009-07-23 23:49 · #

After installing every new page opened with ABP filtering active makes FF 3.6a1pre crash immediately

    Reply from Wladimir Palant:

It doesn’t for me. If this still happen for you with the latest nightly, please give me a link to a crash report (http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Firefox+crashes).

    Reply from Wladimir Palant:

Ah, I see, it isn’t related to Adblock Plus after all. Never mind then.

  23. strel · 2009-07-24 01:32 · #

Forget my last post, something else is failing. Sorry.

  24. Ant · 2009-07-24 19:19 · #

Please make a checker to not to install in SM v1.x! I wasted over an hour and found out it is because dropped support. :(

    Reply from Wladimir Palant:

Well, it clearly says that SeaMonkey 1.1 is not supported both on this site and on addons.mozilla.org. And SeaMonkey 1.1 will also tell you that it cannot install the extension. What else can I do?

  25. Goulven · 2009-07-28 12:24 · #

-> “Block” tab on Flash and Java is no longer permanently visible

    Way better like that. Thanks!

Ad Block stopped working when i upgraded to Firefox 3.5.1?
    Any thoughts?

    Reply from Wladimir Palant:

Not without additional information. How about asking in the forum? The very first question would be whether you are subscribed to any filter subscriptions (https://adblockplus.org/en/getting_started#subscription).

  30. z.a · 2009-08-03 04:22 · #

FYI. My patterns.ini was reset to 1KB, which was the reason why my AdBlock Plus stopped working after sometime upgrading to 1.1 (can’t be sure the exact time). Luckily there was still some backups left and I managed to restore my pattern list.

  31. Aaron · 2009-08-05 21:23 · #

ABP 1.1 no longer blocking Flash and Java ads. I have the “tabs” enabled but they’re no showing up. Was working fine until I did the latest Firefox update (3.5.1?) this morning…

    Reply from Wladimir Palant:

You better ask in the forum (no registration required, simply click “new topic”) because without additional information I cannot help you – and blog comments isn’t the right place to gather that information. In particular, I would be interested in an example page where you experience this problem and whether it shows up in the list of blockable items (see https://adblockplus.org/en/faq_basics#objects).

  32. Pam · 2009-10-01 07:03 · #

Hi, Wladimir. I use Seamonkey v1.1.18 on my Mac (OsX). When I’ve tried to install ABP v1.0, I get an error message that says, “Install script not found.” Please advise.

    Reply from Wladimir Palant:

SeaMonkey 1.1 is no longer supported and that’s its way of telling you this. I recommend giving SeaMonkey 2.0 Beta 2 a try, despite its beta status – it should be way more reliable, especially when it comes to extensions.

  33. Pam · 2009-10-01 20:52 · #

Thank you to your reply to #32, above. BUT, have you done anything to render ABP v1.0.2 inoperable with extant copies of SM v1.1.18?

    Reply from Wladimir Palant:

No but you will hit some issues – see https://adblockplus.org/blog/to-anybody-using-firefox-20-or-adblock-plus-102-it-is-time-to-upgrade

  34. gnurt · 2010-10-13 08:04 · #

i can’t see title “Adblock object” or “adblock image” when i right click “block” tab. ABP icon is appear. Why?

    Thanks

    Reply from Wladimir Palant:

Are you using a development build? This issue will be fixed in the next development build – 1.3a.20101015. Otherwise: feel free to open a topic in the forum (https://adblockplus.org/forum/index.php), you don’t need to register. A random blog post is not the right place.
