Please make it open changelog page after update.

    Reply from Wladimir Palant:

I’m definitely not going to do that – most people don’t care about the changelog, why would I want to annoy them. And those who do can always find it easily.

  2. truly · 2009-08-12 23:04 · #

everything collapses as it should and performance has greatly improved
    excellent update!

  3. Marcus · 2009-08-13 05:33 · #

I too would like to see the changelog in the update information panel, for the following reasons:

    1) Almost every other addon do this already

    2) Users have to specifically click “Show Information” in order to view the panel, so those that don’t (the majority) wouldn’t be bothered by the changelog information, and those that do want it can click and view it!

    3) Although you do have links to the changelog and FAQ in the panel, these can’t be clicked or highlighted, and so are completely useless!

    Please reconsider!

    Reply from Wladimir Palant:

You are talking about something different now, indyk was asking for a page to be opened in a tab after update – like NoScript is doing it. This one is extremely annoying for most users.

As to “Show Information”, that’s simply showing the release notes from addons.mozilla.org. And – yes, it doesn’t allow links and it doesn’t support copying text either. Note that these release notes are currently being displayed in four languages – there is no way I can get the changelog for each release translated. But ok, maybe I can add an English changelog summary somehow (definitely not the full changelog, it is usually way too long).

  4. Indy · 2009-08-13 07:56 · #

I too would like to see a changelog.

  5. Marcus · 2009-08-13 12:41 · #

Ah, I see, then I agree that popping up a new page is annoying, it’s just the “Show Information” release notes that I think you should display. I agree the language issue is potentially problematic, but why not display a summarised changelog in English, and for the other three languages just continue doing whatever you’re already doing now?

  6. Agntx · 2009-08-13 13:11 · #

Thanks for next release. AdBlock Plus 4ever! :)
I also agree with changelog in Firefox extensions update panel.

  7. Eepster · 2009-08-13 17:39 · #

I’m happy to find changelog for myself when I’m ready for it.
Don’t listen to all these info-nerds!
    Great product!

This is a great thing! I like the different colors in the hit list for the various types of rules, i think formulas, whitelists, and element hiding.

i’d like to see a list of all the items that were blocked, which includes the referring site, plus the sites that are hit. i’m probably not being clear…what i mean is a report with fields on it which had the site requesting the hit, the site from which the block info was to come from, the time each thing happened – per field, and anything i don’t know to ask but which can be tracked. i’d like to be able to look at the entire list of every blocked item and have it saved to a file. i know that file might get large, but maybe it could just save a file to somewhere on my hard drive at regular intervals and i would have to be aware they were piling up, but i am responsible for them. maybe you already haave this on the product somewhere, i just haven’t found it yet.

also, can this product be sold? the reason i ask is because, though you said money isnt your motivation, you also mentioned that we ought to cut a break to websites we look at a lot and let them display ads. seems like, finally, this gives the user some power back. and it could lay the foundation for some kind of negiotation between the user and the website producers where using this product you could do something like be able to view their website for free with adblocker for their site off, while you might have to subscribe and pay for sites you block ads on. i think this would finally force advertisers to really work hard to make their advertising really count in the greater scheme of things, they would be forced to make their advertising useful to the user while at the same time making their point. it would open a dialogue between consumer and producer that has been sorely lacking in modern industtrial times. it would allow us consumers to help producers of products make better decisions on what they make, create, fabricate, produce, and advertise and throw at us. it would really actually help the entire idea of taking better care of our work cause if fewer products were created out of better ideas gleened from this communication between consumers and producers then it would actually help take better care of our earth, there would be less rubbish in landfills, less polutants in the air from manufacturing, less of the vast mass of everything that is thrown at us now and better products on the shelves which are actually fewer, but better choices. if consumers and producers were to work together and share the power that comes with managing advertising in a better way, a way which is NOT one-sided as it is today in favor of advertisers/producers but with regular power sharing on both sides, that morphs into a dialogue, that causes better products and better advertising – advertising that truly seeks to educate instead of misinform, that leads to a stronger world society, and consumers which can actually be counted on more consistantly to deliver their purchase, i.e., use their buying power to the advertisers/producers with a much greater reliability than it is today, where advertising seems not to seek to educate and inform in a manner consistant with honesty, but instead to mislead, misinform, and claw blindly at the eyes and resources of the consumer they have so completely muted. consumers have a voice with your product. a vast one. it could change the world. for the better of us all.

write me if any of this made sense to you and we can discuss what could be done.

( i know this is the wrong forum for this comment, but i am excited about your work. please delete this comment if you’d rather not let the other people see it and laugh at me.)

The features you request (displaying additional information for request) are mostly available in the Adblock Plus Watcher extension: https://adblockplus.org/en/abpwatcher

Wladimir, I’m fully on your side about not displaying the changelog. Most people, like my parents and quite many of my non-technical friends that I’ve helped install ABP, would only get confused or annoyed like you’re saying. While I’m personally interested in reading it, being the technical geek I am, it’s of course dead-simple finding it anyway, so why bother creating a shortcut? =)

Of the 21 add-ins I use, ABP is the most appreciated alongside Firebug. Thanks a lot!

  11. Blackxrose · 2009-08-23 04:09 · #

I’m not sure if this is the right place, but I just wanted to say that the new updates seem to have been causing problems for me in some areas of deviantart.com. The first problem I noticed was in their journal feature. Every time I wanted to post a journal, an error would appear and I could not post it unless I disable ABP. Also, since yesterday it stopped another feature from working on there as well. I don’t know if you can fix this problem, but it would be much appreciated as it is a hassle to have to disable ABP every time I wanted to use these two features. Thank you.

Reading some of the newest feedback on addons.mozilla.org I realized there are more people experiencing the same issue as I am, recently. I think it boils down to this:

Adblock Plus 1.0.2 doesn’t block the sites it used to block.
Looking closer at the problem I noticed that EasyList (USA) now requires v1.1, which will not work on Firefox 2.x versions.

The consequence of these changes are that suddenly ads pop up everywhere, rendering Adblock and EasyList completely useless, at least for people like me.

I wouldn’t mind still using the EasyList for 1.0.2 even if it’s no longer maintained. Could you please advise where to get the most recent version using the old filter structure?

Optionally, the EasyList and other subscriptions should be split up in old format vs new format urls.

Hoping for a quick resolve, Best Regards, MQ.

We use iceweasel (firefox 3.0.6) with adblock plus 1.0.2.
Google ads seem to be puncturing thru since yesterday.

  14. twipley · 2009-08-26 21:22 · #

Unfortunately, this version too prevents some website functions working correctly, over here. For example, some functions, like payment made to a credit card, conflict with Adblock Plus on this site: https://accesd.desjardins.com/en.

The tech support guy I phoned to right-away told me to disable Adblock plus for this function to work, even before asking me if I had Firefox. He also told me the issue was a newly occuring one.

Thanks for having taken the time to read those words.
Adblock filtering makes for a really nice and clean Internet, by the way!

  15. John · 2009-08-30 03:40 · #

Since the last update, I’ve had filters purged from Adblock for unknown reasons twice. I only had 2 filters in there, however they’ve both disappeared for no reason I can think of and the filter box is empty – again. No pattern to it or reason I can detect either.

    John

    Reply from Wladimir Palant:

Yes, some people report this issue. Unfortunately, I was unable to find the reason either. The best guess is antivirus software interfering, most people who had this were using Norton Antivirus.

5.5.2 Firefox doesn’t seem to work with 64-bit Vista.

  17. JohnJ · 2009-08-30 23:54 · #

I wish you made a version of Adblock Plus for Internet Explorer 8.

Internet Explorer (all versions) has a 68% market share, so it’s silly to ignore it.

  18. Richard · 2009-09-01 21:38 · #

In response to #13, twipley, regarding accesd. I found the same problem, and deactivated ABP on acces.desjardins.com. I’ve also filed a bug report for the extension on bugzilla.

  19. Jason · 2009-09-03 23:57 · #

    Hi there,

Love your great program. I actually have windows 7 and was wondering if this would be compatible with W7?

Thanks so much and keep up the great work!

    -Jason

    Reply from Wladimir Palant:

As long as Firefox is compatible with Windows 7 (which it is from what I’ve heard) you won’t have any problems. Adblock Plus is absolutely platform-independent, it requires Firefox and nothing else.

  20. twipley · 2009-09-05 05:09 · #

    Well done, Richard.

    Hi,
I have firefox 3.5.5 and it is not possible to install Adslock plus 1.1.1. Everytime I try it there is “download error -228”.
    What can I do?
Adblock is very fine, it worked properly for years! Thank you!

    Reply from Wladimir Palant:

A download error is a download error – for some reason the extension file could not be downloaded. You can find some common reasons here: http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/unable+to+install+add-ons#Download_Error_228

  22. twipley · 2009-09-15 23:21 · #

Firefox version 3.5.5 is not out yet. Stop living in the future!

  23. twipley · 2009-09-15 23:31 · #

Sorry for the double post. Anyone else noticed that digg buttons conflict with Adblock, i.e. that you have to enter the comments page in order to digg a story, contrary to directly digging from the front page or such?

    (site: digg.com)
Or that may just be the easylist subscription, not sure…

  24. Volker Toetter · 2009-09-16 21:03 · #

    Hi,
I have firefox 3.5.3 and adblockplus didn’t work properly since i’ve updated to that.
    What can I do?

    Reply from Wladimir Palant:

How about explaining what “didn’t work properly” means? But please in the forum (no registration required, simply click “create topic”) – this isn’t the right place for conversations.

  25. mikko · 2009-09-18 08:43 · #

    hi,
l have the same problems with some of the guys here, i have firefox 3.5.5 on vista, and after installing
adblock plus it says it is not compatible with firefox 3.5.5.
please help me with this? thanks!

    Reply from Wladimir Palant:

I guess you mean Firefox 3.5.3. Please install from https://addons.mozilla.org/addon/1865 – if it still doesn’t work ask in the forum (no registration required, simply click “new topic”), this isn’t the place for longer conversations.

  26. EP · 2009-09-19 18:37 · #

Responding to JonnJ’s comments about IE8, go download and install IE7Pro for IE8. Adblock plus is for Mozilla based browsers only.

btw, Wladimir Palant, Seamonkey 2.0 beta 2 was released last Saturday Sept. 12 which will be the very last beta before the final release being scheduled in late October.

don’t know why Ralph and mikko are saying they’re using FF 3.5.5 since it’s not even actually been released yet; latest official version is 3.5.3. Those guys need to look at the About Mozilla Firefox dialog box very carefully when checking the Firefox version number.

    hi,
after installation of mozilla 3.5.3 the icon of adblock plus are hidden from the toolbar.
i try to riactivate from the menu options but the icon remains hidden and i don’t know if he work.
i try to remove and reinstall more and more but the problem isn’t resolved.
i also tryed to put icon from right-click on the toolbar and choose “Customize”, but the icon don’t work.
i also tryed to remove and reinstall firefox more time but unsuccessfully
    can you help me ?

    p.s.: o.s.win xp sp3

    Reply from Wladimir Palant:

This is probably being caused by another extension, typically Skype extension. Try disabling the other extensions. Note that the .NET Framework Extension might be active without being visible in the list (https://adblockplus.org/blog/the-return-of-net-framework-assistant).

I cannot view CNN website in FireFox because some filter is blocking. I have searched for URL’s with CNN in them and then disabled the filter. Nothing works except to view in IE. Any suggestions?

When will Ad Block Plus work properly with FireFox on Windows 7 and when will it work properly with Safari on Snow Leopard? I really like your product and thank you for the work you do, it is always the first thing I load after install FireFox on anyone’s computer.

    Reply from Wladimir Palant:

Adblock Plus works fine on any Firefox installation – Windows 7 or not. As to Safari Adblock – this is a separate project that has nothing to do with Adblock Plus.

  31. twipley · 2009-10-17 00:07 · #

I am not quite sure if I am at the right place to ask but when you install Adblock Plus I think sometimes it offers you a list of subscriptions to choose from but sometimes it does not. Any idea what is happening there, do you think it is only in my head thank you.

    Reply from Wladimir Palant:

You only get that list on the first installation. Otherwise: see https://adblockplus.org/en/subscriptions

  32. twipley · 2009-10-21 01:36 · #

Yeah, I know that, but sometimes (half of the time?) on the first installation one doesn’t get that list. It just doesn’t open up automatically. One has to go to Filters > Add filter subscription.

I’ve done some tests, and it seems if you press the “restart Firefox” button after installation you don’t get the list, but if you close it manually then fire it back up the list of choices appear.

I’m not sure what causes this, but the thing I know is that half of the time one doesn’t get automatic access to that list.

    Reply from Wladimir Palant:

Then probably session restore interferes in your case. There were some reports about that but I couldn’t reproduce that issue myself so far.

  33. twipley · 2009-10-21 17:04 · #

Confirmed in 100% of the cases. Installing Windows XP, Firefox v3.5, then Adblock Plus v1.1.1. Results: if I press the “restart Firefox” button, then I have to manually add the subscription, but otherwise the function works fine (here).

Anybody else suffering from the same issue?

Is there a version of Adblock Plus for Safari? I really like it when using Firefox…however…a certain game I like to play is not functioning well in Firefox…so I’m playing it in Safari…and the ads are very annoying.

    Thanks for your help.

    Reply from Wladimir Palant:

    No, see https://adblockplus.org/blog/how-are-supported-applications-chosen-for-adblock-plus (#5).

There are other projects providing similar functionality for Safari however (OS X only since Safari doesn’t offer even its limited extensibility on Windows). Google is your friend (http://burgersoftware.com/en/safariadblock).
