Adblock Plus and (a little) more

Weave Sync for Adblock Plus: Weave 0.3.0 now supported · 2009-06-01 01:24 by Wladimir Palant

A new Weave Sync for Adblock Plus 0.3.alpha+ development build (2009053123) has been uploaded. This extension will synchronize Adblock Plus data across multiple computers. Important: This will only work if Weave 0.3.0 or 0.3.2 is installed. Also, Adblock Plus 1.0 or higher is required.

Installation

https://adblockplus.org/devbuilds/

Changes

  • Added support for Weave 0.3.0

Known issues

  • Only filters are synced, not their position however. Synchronized profiles will have the same filters but might show them in a different order.

    Wonderful!
Sync of last hit date will be very useful too

    Reply from Wladimir Palant:

I didn’t want to sync non-essential data, that’s a waste of bandwidth and would cause far more conflicts (two computers are very likely to increase hit count on the same filter independently of each other, which one “wins” in this situation is pretty random).

Maybe, it can be synced not often than once a day, and, for example, only for items, changed in last 1-3-7 days?

    Reply from Wladimir Palant:

No, that’s not how it works. And it won’t help preventing merge conflicts that will necessarily occur if frequently changed data like hit counts is synced.

I would like to use this but is there any way you could make it work similarly to how Noscript just makes a bookmark with all the info? I don’t use Weave as I already use Xmarks and don’t really want to have to install Weave just to get this extension to work. Also, this does not work with Weave 0.4.0

    Reply from Wladimir Palant:

I will need to update for Weave 0.4.0.

As to using a similar hack as NoScript – I am pretty sure I don’t want to do that. Weave provides real synchronization, you can run two browsers in parallel and Weave will sync the relevant changes between them. That isn’t something Xmarks can do.

Ok. I can see where you are coming from with that. I just like the Xmarks syncing better because it wouldn’t require the installation of yet another syncing program and I don’t run 2 browsers in parallel, im either using one at work or one at home.

Has there been any progress on this? Weave is at 0.6 now, but the only Weave Sync extensions I can find (dev builds) are still for 0.3.

    Reply from Wladimir Palant:

Unfortunately – no. Weave changes too frequently right now, I’m not sure I will be able to keep up with their releases. The current codebase needs a significant update to work with current Weave again. I want to do it occasionally but I’m not sure when I will find the time.

    Hi there,

maybe you will find the time, after Weave 1.0 or 1.1 is released.. :)

    Currently version 1.0b2 is available.

Maybe the changes in future will not that much frequently as they was in the past..

    regards,

I’m not even remotely interested in using the synchronization feature. How do I stop it from coming up every time I start firefox?

    Reply from Wladimir Palant:

By the sound of your question, I don’t think you installed this extension. I suggest you ask in a forum (https://adblockplus.org/forum/index.php if your question is in any way related to Adblock Plus or http://forums.mozillazine.org/ otherwise) and explain what exactly is “coming up” for you.

Please update the plugin for the new version of Weave. We need this plugin. Keep up the good work.

    Reply from Wladimir Palant:

The current development build (https://adblockplus.org/devbuilds/weavesync/) should work fine.

This is awesome. I am using ABP for a bunch of years now and beside blocking ads, i do blacklist some other site components like, say a twiter widget. I do use a shared FF profile for my user accounts and/or operating systems and that ensures that most/all of my preferences are in sync across my desktop sessions. But this will help me more, because i’m planning to buy a laptop in addition to my desktop and this should ensure that my robust filter list is going to be in sync between my machines. Thank You ABP, Thank you Wladimir Palant.

I am using AdBlock Plus and Weave to synchronize my PCs. But I have problems with “Weave Sync for Adblock Plus”. It tells me that it needs more AddOns. I have installed AdBlock Plus, AdBlock Plus Element Hiding Helper and Weave Sync – the latest versions of them. What’s wrong? What else do I need?

    Reply from Wladimir Palant:

It needs a compatible Weave version – but the Weave version it works with is outdated. Unfortunately, I didn’t have time to update this add-on lately.

When can we expect Firefox Sync for Adblock Plus?

    Reply from Wladimir Palant:

If you find somebody to do the work – whenever that person is finished. Otherwise, with some luck around the time Adblock Plus 1.3 is released. With other things requiring my attention this one gets pushed back every time…
