New job again · 2009-09-02 20:46 by Wladimir Palant

In case somebody noticed that I’ve been pretty quiet recently — many things happened which kept me occupied. In particular, I started a new job yesterday and will now be developing Songbird. I have been following Songbird’s development since the very beginning and even managed to develop one of the first third-party add-ons for it. It is a very interesting project and a great development team so I am really excited about this.

Status update · 2007-08-26 21:04 by Wladimir Palant

You probably noticed that I have been very quiet lately — I only managed to reply a few of the incoming mails, almost didn’t comment in bug reports and didn’t visit the Adblock Plus forum at all. Main reason is that I finally moved with my wife to our own apartment in Cologne and we simply didn’t have Internet at home yet. This means that I only had Internet access at work where I had already enough to do with getting TomTom HOME 2.0 ready for a release.

New job · 2007-06-15 17:49 by Wladimir Palant

I have been very silent recently, but I think it is time to give an update on what I am doing. Today is officially the first day on my new job — I am joining the developer team behind TomTom HOME. Nice at least one of my hobbies (Mozilla) has made it to a job. TomTom allowed me to stay in Cologne but I expect going to Amsterdam rather frequently.

Moving again · 2007-05-16 16:11 by Wladimir Palant

I am finished here in Oslo, so I will move to Cologne next week. In some way I feel sad about it, I really liked Oslo. On the other hand, I will finally be in the same country as everybody I care about, it has been too long. Anyway, goodbye Norway and welcome Germany!

On a related note, it seems that I won’t have internet access the next week. My internet provider wanted to get rid of me so much that it decided to disconnect me one week before the date I asked.

Why you should not get married in Germany · 2007-03-31 02:32 by Wladimir Palant

Until recently I thought that the low number of marriages and the relatively high age of people getting married in Germany was solely an expression of the mentality where everybody only relies on himself. Now I have learned that there is another factor as well — getting married in Germany is just difficult, despite all the talk about “improving family-friendliness of the state”.

Getting back to Oslo · 2007-03-01 12:41 by Wladimir Palant

I already left Darmstadt and I am on my way back to Oslo now. The unpleasant surprise is that Germanwings no longer flies to Oslo. I have no idea why they stopped serving this direction in the middle of the season — I couldn’t find it mentioned anywhere, there are just no more flights between Cologne and Oslo (the webpages of both airports confirm this so this isn’t a glitch in Germanwings’ database). That means that I will fly from Düsseldorf with Norwegian which is slightly less convenient. But at least I will spend a few more days in Cologne.

Looking for a job again · 2006-12-20 13:15 by Wladimir Palant

I should be finished with my PhD in May. What should I do once I am done? This question is bugging me right now. These three years have made it very clear that I don’t want to continue an academic career. I want to produce good software that will be used by real people, and sadly this is simply unrealistic being at a university.

Moving to Germany · 2006-11-11 03:03 by Wladimir Palant

I just came back from Germany a few days ago and now (in a few hours) I am going there again. This came quite unexpectedly, I didn’t know myself until two days ago. This time I will stay in Darmstadt for a few months, working with the guys at the university and hopefully producing something useful together. I should come back to Oslo in the beginning of March to finish my PhD thesis — plan is to be all done before May. That’s some crazy time coming up…

It is traveling time again · 2006-10-03 02:15 by Wladimir Palant

I will be traveling a lot, starting this Saturday. I am taking the remaining week of my vacation visiting Cologne and Hamburg, then I’ll be attending to ACM Multimedia in Santa Barbara, CA and NetGames in Singapore. I won’t be back in Oslo until November so don’t expect me to do much Adblock Plus development until then. I’ll try to answer mails from time to time.
