Adblock Plus and (a little) more

Adblock Plus 1.7 for Chrome and Opera released · 2013-12-18 15:57 by Thomas Greiner

Install Adblock Plus 1.7 for Chrome
Install Adblock Plus 1.7 for Opera (Opera 17 or higher required)

This release includes significant changes to the icon and the icon popup. It is the next step in redesigning the entire UI after releasing new versions of our first-run page on all platforms earlier this year.

Adblock Plus Icon Popup

The redesigned popup allows us to seamlessly integrate features such as the blocked ads counter and the emergency notifications. Users who want to hide the icon can now right-click on it and hide it from there which is why we removed the related option from the Options page. The icon can be brought back on the browser’s Extensions page.

Changes in detail

  • Icon popup has been redesigned.
  • Extension icon has been improved and relocated from the address bar to the browser toolbar.
  • The number of blocked elements on the current page can be displayed in the icon now.
  • Simplified selecting element to block on some websites, if the element selected cannot be blocked its parent container will be selected instead.
  • Selection of element to block now reacts to Enter and Esc hotkeys (select element and cancel selection respectively).
  • Fixed: Selecting element to block didn’t prevent links from being followed.
  • Fixed: Elements would sometimes be stuck with wrong background color after “Block element” menu item was used and canceled.

Just stop redesigning the actual icon. They’re all pretty much the same so let us just get used to one already.

    Reply from Wladimir Palant:

The main reason for the new icon is the size – Chrome expects a 19×19 icon, meaning slightly larger than the standard 16×16 size. We finally came around to creating a new icon for Chrome rather than adding a border to the small icon we already had. Since we had to create a new icon for that anyway, we further reduced detail (not really helpful at that size) and made the text larger/better to read.

Can you add an option to put the icon back in the address bar please?

    Reply from Wladimir Palant:

I don’t think Chrome allows extensions that have both a page action and a browser action. But even if it did – the toolbar is the right place for an icon that applies to all web pages, Chrome’s extension guidelines make that perfectly clear. We cannot keep an option around to revert every change in the user interface we ever did, this would unnecessarily complicate the options page and make maintaining the extension a lot harder (much more code to be tested).

Any updates on the Safari port? Thanks.

    Reply from Wladimir Palant:

The Safari port is coming along pretty well. There was a major issue caused by a Safari bug – this bug is now fixed with Safari 6.1.1 and 7.0.1 (released two days ago). So we should be able to start public testing early next year, not much happening this year any more with everybody going on vacation.

I like the update, but I agree with the others that it would be nice to have an option to put the icon back to where it was.

can i block the facebook, twitter, and google+ share these number icons that are inside the icon popup?

it’s annoying to have an ad blocker that is inserting facebook, twitter, and google+ share buttons.

    Reply from Wladimir Palant:

Simply click on the “Ads blocked” heading and the entire section will be hidden.

In case you are wondering: these icons are coming from the extension itself, these aren’t real Facebook etc. share buttons (we wouldn’t use those, for privacy reasons).

It took a while to find and customize the new icon to actually show up. But that is not important. The main problems are that
    1: my old “domain##.class” rules no longer work;
2: “selecting element to block” functionality don’t work at all, I can’t select anything (yeah it was somewhat clumsy before, but now it’s useless).
    This is with Fedora 17 ×86, chromium-25.0.1364.172-1.fc17.i686.

    Reply from Wladimir Palant:

Sounds like there is some issue in outdated Chrome versions – current version is Chrome 30. We will need to look into this.

Unfortunately, getting old Chrome versions for testing is pretty complicated, and the number of development build users on old Chrome versions is also insignificant. This is why officially we only support the latest Chrome version.

    Reply from Wladimir Palant:

The issues in old Chrome versions have been fixed, a new development build should be out in 25 minutes. We will also release Adblock Plus 1.7.1 with the fix today.

All google adds which were previously blocked are now showing again even though I have ‘Allow some non-intrusive advertising’ unchecked and I can no longer select any elements to block using the drop down block elements tool and the right click block appears to only work on some images not on any other elements at all. I use a laptop now when I load google ads fill my entire screen until I page down.

As said about elements I blocked with domain##.class rules don’t work anymore.

Also I have ‘Hide placeholders of blocked elements’ selected but I’m still seeing the large empty spaces where adds used to be unlike before the update when they were removed.

I’m using chrome version 24.0.1312.52 m is there any way for me to rollback to the previous version that actually worked in my browser?

First of all thank you for creating this awesome extension. You rock. However, the old icon / placement in Chrome was much better. That is all, thanks!

  13. Kyle · 2013-12-19 00:07 · #

I am having the same issue Dianna, I too would like to find a previous version if possible because this update no longer blocks ads for me.

  14. Kyle · 2013-12-19 00:09 · #

I also would like to add that in the drop down menu it says disabled, but when I enable it and the menu closes it reverts back to disabled each time.

    unasked update are for shit!
new icon location is for shit because blocking is related to siteadress
    new icon is ugly

    go to hell…

Can you put the icon back in the address bar, please?

I really don’t like the new location!!

  20. Usuario · 2013-12-19 11:44 · #

    Excellent, I love it!

  21. Dont like it · 2013-12-19 12:00 · #

The new icon in the toolbar is much more obtrusive – i rarely need the icon and it was better hidden in the address bar.
On the rare occasion that i need to show ads, its handy there.
The toolbar button I hate and hid it as soon as it appeared. Now its a hassle if I want to unhide the ads.

  22. Yaffle · 2013-12-19 12:15 · #

I also much preferred the icon in address bar I’m afraid.

ABP 1.7 doesn’t work in latest Opera Developer.Icon (button) appears for one moment and then it is gone.
    Where I can find ABP 1.6.2 ?

for chrome / opera ==> old builds:

I must agree with others, an icon in the address bar was much more cleaner and understandable, and it took less space.

And it was easy to see whether adblock is enabled for particular site or not.

Please, please, allow to move the icon back to the address bar.

  26. Luxferre · 2013-12-19 13:23 · #

Everything is fine now.Something was corrupt in Opera
Dev. so I installed same version of Opera “over the top”.
    ABP 1.7 is working fine.

  27. Greg · 2013-12-19 13:43 · #

    Mapx! Thanks for the link.

Wladimir! Thanks for fixing it. #1068 works for me. I may not get the latest official Chrome version from the Fedora Chromium repository, but I can keep using the dev build to report problems in time.

    Reply from Wladimir Palant:

That would be great. As I said, development builds are rarely used by people with outdated Chrome versions so we get fairly little feedback on those. In this particular case, Chrome changed their messaging for extensions twice in the last 10 versions and these changes aren’t properly documented. As a result, we were supporting really old Chrome versions and the new ones, but we failed to support their intermediate solution.

  28. Crom · 2013-12-19 14:05 · #

The icon needs to be moved back, it makes so much more sense to show the icon in the omnibox, to tell if ABP is running on that particular site or not, rather than a permanent icon in the toolbar. The old way was also far less obtrusive.

I just removed the Chrome extension and re-added it to update to 1.7.2, but the elements blocker still doesn’t work. As mentioned before, I have Chrome 31.0.1650.63 m.

    Thank you~

  30. j. · 2013-12-19 17:18 · #

Note to the above: It only seems to happen on the Chrome New Tab page.

Originally, the element blocker allowed me to block the Most Visited thumbnail tiles on the New Tab. It doesn’t any longer.

The blocker does seem to work at blocking elements on other pages. For example, the Yahoo logo animation in Yahoo Mail.

I installed Adblockplus 2 or 3 months ago and it has been marvellous but just today I am starting to get some ads again – and they are the nuisance Flash kind that use up my monthly internet allowance.
