Thanks so much for adding Firefox 3 compatibility – especially since Firefox 3 is still in beta. I really appreciate it!

  2. Jay · 2008-04-09 22:52 · #

I know this was briefly discussed on the dev builds page, but is check-banner-links still available as an about:config option? Regardless of performance, I find that it helps block a LOT of ads that aren’t caught without it.

    Reply from Wladimir Palant:

No, that option has been completely removed – one reason being the issues it causes in Firefox 3. You can use Element Hiding Helper extension, it is much more flexible (and way more useful) than “check links”.

Great work! :) Works like a charm in FF3 Beta 5. Actually better than it has ever worked in any previous version of ABP or any previous beta. I’m really impressed.

I won’t miss the check banner link option. While the feature itself was good and a good idea, it was also rather slow and so far I could still block any add without it – might be that some adds are unblockable that way, but as long as it still blocks 90% of all ads, the WWW is useful again. After all I don’t even want to block all ads. Some banners don’t really disturb me and it’s just fair to watch some ads to keep some sites paid. However, some webmasters simply don’t know when it’s getting too much.

Thank you for adding Fx3 Beta support. Can anyone confirm that when ABP is added to the status bar on the Mac version of Fx, the ABP information window flashes and then disappears? I have noticed this with other installed extensions, so I think it’s an Fx3 Beta5 bug.

  5. Aerik · 2008-04-10 19:23 · #

Could you explain WHY you removed check banner links?

    Reply from Wladimir Palant:

There was a forum discussion on that – see link in the detailed changelog.

Aerik, Check Wladimir Palant’s Reply on comment two

He said that this option is currently causing some issues and problems with firefox 3, this is why it was removed. I hope this option will be available again in a later version, of AdBlock Plus when it will be set up to work corretly with FF3

  7. penkapp · 2008-04-10 21:45 · #

Regarding comment #4, this is Bug 409427 <https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=409427> and not specific to ABP.

Just curious, why did the keyboard shortcuts change?
I have a strong Ctrl+Shift+B habit that now has to be slightly modified

    Reply from Wladimir Palant:

See detailed changelog for a link to my blog post about this. I would love to avoid changing the shortcuts but Ctrl+Shift+B is already taken in Firefox 3.

After installing the latest update for adblock, firefox is having problems with openings pages. Many sites doesn’t load or pictures don’t load.

When i disable adblock in the addons manager everything works perfectly again.

    FF: 2.0.0.13
    AB+: 0754
    FiltersetG: 0313

    Reply from Wladimir Palant:

Using Filterset.G with Adblock Plus is not a good idea, see http://adblockplus.org/en/faq_project#filterset.g

If removing Filterset.G and its filters doesn’t help, could you ask in the forum? I would need to ask you a few questions to figure out what is going on – and my blog isn’t the right place for that.

found the answer to my keyboard shortcut question:

Looks like 0.7.5.4 has broken Twitter for Firefox 2.0.0.13 under Windows XP – disabling it for the site restores functionality.

    Reply from Wladimir Palant:

That would be a problem with your filters – you should report the problem to the maintainer of the filter subscription you are using (if that sentence doesn’t help you, please ask in the forum – you will get the necessary pointers there).

a very nice ad blocker, one that people using other browsers would have to pay for. i do recommend adding as many optional filters as you can to block as many annoying ads as possible.

firefox + adblock + noscript + cslite + downloadhelper + downthemall + ietab = a dream browser come true. block ads, block cookies, block javascripts, download any type media file, a great download manager that doesnt need installed and a way to ditch ie forever. as i said a dream browser.

  13. Matt · 2008-04-11 08:14 · #

i mean adblock plus but i think everyone knew that =P thanks wladimir for such a nice add-on. we all appreciate your hard work.

  14. Dawna · 2008-04-11 16:43 · #

Maybe this has been answered somewhere, but I can’t find it.

What happened to the “adblock link” option? It was so nice to be able to block an entire ad, not simply the image and yet leaving behind the text and link portion of it.

    Reply from Wladimir Palant:

See above – the link to the forum discussion with reasons is in the detailed changelog. And element hiding is the better way of doing this.

  15. The Invoker · 2008-04-11 19:28 · #

maybe element hiding helper is better but it’s not easy to use it yet.
I mean with links block i only had to right click the object and select “hide link”……
whit element hiding helper it’s more difficult to block a link.

    Problem with Adblock Plus 0.7.5.4.

In Firefox 2.0.0.13, Ctrl+Shift+E (preferences) is in conflict with Tools, Add-ons.

Back to Adblock Plus 0.7.5.3 and Ctrl+Shift+A (preferences).

    Reply from Wladimir Palant:

Tools / Add-ons doesn’t have a keyboard shortcut in Firefox 2.0.0.13 – that one must have been added by some other extension.

    Reply from Wladimir Palant:

PS: Keyboard shortcuts are configurable: http://adblockplus.org/en/faq_customization#shortcuts

  17. Trucker46 · 2008-04-13 14:20 · #

    Wladimir, you’re right!

The conflict is between MR Tech Local Install 5.3.2.6 and your great Adblock Plus 0.7.5.4 but, I can’t uninstall or disable MR Tech Local Install 5.3.2.6 only for using Adblock Plus 0.7.5.4.

I don’t understand why you’ve changed the keyboard shurtcuts in AdBlock Plus. For me, Ctrl+Shift+A (preferences) and Ctrl+Shift+B (blockable items), it’s perfect.

  18. Trucker46 · 2008-04-13 14:29 · #

When I said: “I don’t understand why you’ve changed the keyboard shurtcuts in AdBlock Plus. For me, Ctrl+Shift+A (preferences) and Ctrl+Shift+B (blockable items), it’s perfect.”, the answer is explained on this page:

    http://adblockplus.org/blog/shortcut-keys-are-hard

  19. Trucker46 · 2008-04-13 15:17 · #

    Here’s the solution:

In MR Tech Local Install 5.3.2.6, go to Options, Menu Options, Tools Menu Options, in section Disable Shortcut Key for:, click on Tools|Extensions. I suggest also you click on Tools|Themes.

Thanks Wladimir and long life to AdBlock Plus.

I really found the link blocking useful. Element hiding is not a good alternative at all since the blocked image is still downloaded, consuming the bandwidth. For me the slower performance of link blocking (which was not noticeable) is an excellent price to pay for saving the bandwidth (which is noticeable on my connection). Having the linking blocking optional and turned off by default is fine with me, as long as I can enable it. Where can I download the previous version of adblockplus? I do not see a link on this website.

  21. just another user · 2008-04-30 20:05 · #

Yes, Boris, and even more – with hiding, you can be unaware of downloading of illegal content, which can resides in the cache of your browser for months, and be found later by your collegues, family members, or even authorities.

  22. Boris · 2008-05-05 04:13 · #

For everyone who wants to downgrade, here is what to do. First, uninstall adblock plus (do not worry about preferences deleted, they will not disappear). Then simply install the old version from http://downloads.mozdev.org/adblockplus/adblockplus-0.7.5.3.xpi.

    Reply from Wladimir Palant:

I would rather link to https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addons/versions/1865 – it has an appropriate warning for installation of older versions.

I just love Adblock Plus, well the function. But please get a graphic designer and let him remake the symbol — and i even add a please. Give that the attention that the whole good add on is worth having.
