Adblock Plus and (a little) more

Status update: 2010-10-30 · 2010-10-31 10:04 by Wladimir Palant

Worked 6 days on Adblock Plus this week.

Done

  • Major update to Element Hiding Helper code and architecture
  • Added Shift+Mousewheel handling to Element Hiding Helper, also lock/unlock command
  • Finalized Element Hiding Helper strings, translations started
  • A little eye candy for Element Hiding Helper — better styling for hotkey labels
  • Release candidates for Adblock Plus 1.3, Element Hiding Helper 1.1 and Diagnostics 1.1.3 are done (the latter has no real changes, turned out none were necessary)
  • Russian translation for Adblock Plus, Russian and German translations for Element Hiding Helper (with some help from forum.mozilla-russia.org users)
  • Coordinated translations on Babelzilla, made sure the released locales are free of errors (way too many translations still unfinished however)
  • Dropped Indonesian, Malay and Brasilian Portuguese locales from this Adblock Plus release, these weren’t even updated for Adblock Plus 1.2

In progress

  • Keyboard navigation for Element Hiding Helper, similar to caret browsing — doesn’t quite work reliably yet, will have to go into the next release.
  • Firefox Sync support is more complicated than what I hoped for, my implementation causes errors that I don’t understand. No way to get this stable in the short time, this will have wait until the next Adblock Plus release (might do an intermediate Adblock Plus 1.3.5 release for this and some performance optimizations).

Next

  • Big release day on Tuesday
  • Finish server-side implementation of the issue reporter (sending notifications, removing old reports, immediate feedback for known issues)
  • Performance optimizations for Adblock Plus

Keep up the good work and thanks.

Our users (mostly university students) buy the e-learning software (business simulation) where they learn how to do business. Among others they design ads for their ad campaigns for their brands. You probably can imagine how your software steals their money by stealing their content. Just by adding really strange filters like ###ad_5.

For our older version we made workaround and renamed everything which included ‘ad’ to ‘da’. This time we will not go that way. We will rather promote that your software is known to block content they have paid for and advise them to turn it off.

Keep up good work and thanks for content-free internet.

ABP is not responsible for the lists the user adds.

Sure this is as true as arms industry is not responsible for people killing each other.

@Jozef Briss: What a sophisticated and suitable comparison! AdBlock=ArmsIndustry! Pffff….
I myself just want to have the option to hide ads in the internet just like watching tv and switching away when the ads start. Maybe it is your own problem if you want to earn money with annoying manipulating stuff.

@AdblockTeam: since ABP version 1.3 it doesn’t work. I can’t see it in the context menu and i can’t open the preferences or add a new filter list. System: Win7-32bit, FF 3.6.12, Noscript.
But thank you for your absoluteley great work til now!

    Reply from Wladimir Palant:

Yes, I already uploaded version 1.3.1, addons.mozilla.org should update within an hour :-(

    Reply from Wladimir Palant:

As you can see above, you should be installing Adblock Plus 1.3.1 which works fine. Installing from https://addons.mozilla.org/addon/1865/versions/ seems to be possible already, automatic updated don’t work yet.

Is it possible to localize the update notification?

    Reply from Wladimir Palant:

You mean the update info (release notes)? They have been translated to German, Russian, Hebrew and Korean so far, I added the translations on addons.mozilla.org.

Hi Wladimir, I’m from Malaysia and I would like to pick up where the previous Bahasa Malaysia translator left off. How do I start? What are the things that needs to be translated?

    Reply from Wladimir Palant:

Great! Adblock Plus translations are currently being done on Babelzilla – you need to register on http://www.babelzilla.org/. Malay translation of Adblock Plus is here: http://www.babelzilla.org/index.php?option=com_wts&Itemid=88&language=72&extension=4592&type=filelist2 – you probably won’t be able to join because a translator is already registered, please create a forum topic on http://www.babelzilla.org/forum/index.php?showforum=61 then, an administrator will add you. You can see there what isn’t translated, simply add the missing translations and change status to “Released”. I will get a notification about that and will test your translation.

Please note that translating Adblock Plus isn’t a one-time effort – every now and then a new release will introduce new strings and the translation needs to be updated. I usually give translators two weeks before a release.
