Adblock Plus and (a little) more

Dropping support for Firefox 3.0 · 2010-10-25 14:37 by Wladimir Palant

Adblock Plus 1.3 will be using a simpler and faster module to manage preferences. This module isn’t in Adblock Plus development builds yet but it is already used in the latest Element Hiding Helper build. As it turned out, this module isn’t working properly in Firefox 3.0 due to some JavaScript engine bug. It’s not clear which bug it is and whether it has a simple work-around. Frankly, I am not very inclined to spend time researching historical bugs in Bugzilla. Instead, Adblock Plus 1.3 and Element Hiding Helper 1.1 will no longer support Firefox 3.0. Anybody still using Firefox 3.0 should be reminded that Mozilla ended support for Firefox 3.0 in March 2010, and by now it has a large number of known and unpatched security issues — using it to browse the web is not safe. I highly recommend updating to the latest Firefox release (currently Firefox 3.6).

Other applications affected by this change are Songbird (versions 1.4 through 1.8 are no longer supported, at least Songbird 1.9 is required) and Midbrowser (apparently no longer being developed). While this might hurt Songbird users (after all, there will be no official Songbird 1.9 release and Songbird 1.10 isn’t finished) this is a necessary step and a big relief for me — supporting four different Gecko branches is hard. Mozilla will likely end support for Firefox 3.5 soon (my guess would be after Firefox 3.5.15 release which is scheduled for December) and I will do the same shortly after that. Mozilla is actively working on process separation in Fennec and Firefox, supporting this new architecture in Adblock Plus will be hard enough without having to worry about compatibility with Firefox 3.5.

This JS bug you’re talking about in Mozilla Firefox 3.0 is now appearing in Mozilla Firefox 3.6.12
I have constant errors telling me a script has stopped responding. So far it’s only appeared on YouTube. One script error mentioned Chrome.
    It is very annoying. =(
All add-ons and browsers up to date.

    Reply from Wladimir Palant:

Unfortunately, these errors are pretty hard to investigate (because of https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=574616). But it is probably related to one of your add-ons (most likely not Adblock Plus). One thing for sure: it has absolutely nothing to do with the JS bug I am talking about.

    I think it’s caused by Firefox 3.6.12
Because it didn’t start happening until I installed 3.6.12
The JS script error mentions Ad Block Plus which is why I thought it was related.
    The errors occur on youtube(dot)com

    You may be right:
    Script: http://s.ytimg.com/yt/jsbin/www-core-vflub_lro.js:112
Looks like JRE is causing it.

    Sorry.

    This is the error I was talking about;
    Script: chrome://adblockplus/content/utils.js:90

I wonder if it’s just YouTube.

    Reply from Wladimir Palant:

See https://www.mozdev.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=23414#c2 – as it turns out this issue isn’t related to Adblock Plus at all.

    Thanks for the info.

Yeah I tested it out on both IE and FF earlier. It’s definitely YouTube’s real time bar. That shows favorites and liked videos.
