Adblock Plus and (a little) more

Status Update: 2010-09-17 · 2010-09-17 19:07 by Wladimir Palant

Done

  • Removed leftovers of the old website, unified navigation menu in different parts of the website.
  • Finally updated Textpattern now that the only thing depending on it is this blog.
  • Improved Anwiki sync so that www repository contains individual changes along with all the necessary information now.
  • Significantly improved startup performance of Adblock Plus (found a way to speed up Gecko’s processing of the element hiding stylesheet).
  • Changed externally added subscriptions so that they no longer persist, updated public interface documentation.

In progress

  • Sending in reports about filter issues — made some progress on the client side, the usual scenario is almost done (screenshots).

Next

  • Add handling of edge cases in the issue reporter (users without filter subscriptions etc.).
  • Create server script to receive issue reports.

Can you blog about this significant improved startup performance?

    Reply from Wladimir Palant:

I will publish a new development build announcement when issue reporter lands – will mention it then. I didn’t do precise measurements yet but the improvement seems to be in the area of 10-15% of the startup delay added by Adblock Plus.

It probably worth mentioning the progress on the translation of the website. Part of the documentation is now available in four more languages — Russian, Hebrew, Korean and Spanish — in addition to English, French and German.

These blog posts are more about my personal progress. But – sure, it is very nice so see the work I’ve put into Anwiki migration pay off so fast.

My pc gets infected as soon as i use any other browser without ABP. If i can’t read the content in a peaceful manner and ABP helps me do that… then i will use it.
I don’t mind watching ads on TV…. infact i like lot of ads on TV. There should be a better way to show ads. Not just some flashy banners, hyper linked text and pop-ups with sounds.

I didn’t want to bring in Apple into disco, but iads are pretty interesting… I actually click them to see some really cool ads. Similarly there should be other ways….

I d just wonder about how many people are actually using AdBlock and AdBlock Plus. Do you have some recent data ?

    Reply from Wladimir Palant:

    The data is public: https://addons.mozilla.org/statistics/addon/1865
