Adblock Plus and (a little) more

Adblock Plus roadmap changes - Firefox Sync and Electrolysis · 2010-07-09 04:26 by Wladimir Palant

I had a chance to talk to some Firefox Sync developers at the Mozilla Summit today. The interesting results:

  • The API is relatively stable now so an extension integrating with Firefox Sync should no longer expect to be broken all the time.
  • Fennec (Firefox Mobile) already has Firefox Sync built-in (ok, that wasn’t really news, it was announced on Planet earlier).
  • Firefox 4 will likely have Sync built-in as well, work on that is underway.
  • There is probably a simpler way to integrate with Firefox Sync than what the Weave Sync for Adblock Plus add-on does right now.

So I decided to change my plans. Weave Sync for Adblock Plus add-on will be scrapped. Instead I added built-in support for Firefox Sync to Adblock Plus 1.3 roadmap — tentative for now though I really hope to be able to do it despite other large changes on that list.

The other addition to the roadmap is support for Fennec 2.0 (unscheduled). Fennec recently started running chrome and content in separate processes, same change will likely come to Firefox after Firefox 4. The impact on Adblock Plus is very significant and restoring compatibility will not be easy from what I understood (especially if the same extension needs to continue supporting Firefox 3.6). I doubt that there will be time for these changes in the Adblock Plus 1.3 timeframe, fortunately there should still be time before Fennec 2.0 release.

In slightly unrelated news, I learned that there is still a chance that the Element Hiding Helper hotkey (Ctrl+Shift+K) will be freed again before Firefox 4 release, so I will not change it just yet. As people running Minefield or Firefox 4 beta 1 probably noticed, that hotkey is currently reserved for the new heads up display.

Excellent news! I was an early adopter of Weave, and this sort of Sync support can’t come fast enough. Haven’t had a chance to use Sync yet though, I will soon.

Did they mention if the syncing of actual addons is planned? EG, if I don’t have Adblock Plus installed on some machine, will Sync go download/install Adblock? Or will it only sync settings?

    Reply from Wladimir Palant:

Yes, they mentioned syncing add-ons, it is planned. They also want to make it easier for add-ons to support Sync, the most common cases should be trivial to implement (Adblock Plus is not a common case).

Thanks for the update – I have started using Sync and I am impressed so far.

Built-in support by Adblock Plus would be nice.

    Cheers.

Also the “syncing add-ons” news is fantastic :-)

    Hi Wladimir,

as firefox 4.next becomes multiprocess there is no need to support firefox 3.6 most people will have upgraded to the latest version and everyone is very appreciative of the fantastic job you’re doing.
There is no need to take up your supporting obsolete stuff.
i mean ultimately the choice is for you only, but i dont think many people will mind if you abandon 3.6, they will definitely empathize with your position

    Reply from Wladimir Palant:

Some people happen to mind that I abandoned Firefox 2. Particularly the people using browsers that aren’t as fast to update their rendering engine as Firefox.

I generally try to support at least the versions that Mozilla supports. That means that by the time Fennec 2.0 comes out I’ll support Firefox 3.6 and 4.0 – both not multiprocess. When Firefox 4.next comes out I’ll have to support at least Firefox 4.0. So there will be quite a long period where I’ll have to support both the old and the new way of doing things.

The good news is that I had a rather helpful talk with Johnny Stenback about this and I think that I have a plan. But according to Johnny right now is too early to start looking into things, the developers haven’t figured out all the details themselves yet.

The ABP addon will need to be updated again as Mozilla plans to release two new betas of Firefox 4 (beta 2 and beta 3) in the next few weeks. see the MozillaWiki Releases page on the latest info on the upcoming betas of Firefox 4:

    Reply from Wladimir Palant:

I updated the compatibility info on addons.mozilla.org – installing from there will be possible within an hour. I’ll update the development builds a little later.

Adblock does not run it Firefox 4 yet? That’s it for the Firefox 4 update. I am too hooked on ad block to use a browser that will let all those ads in. thanks for the good work Wladimir.

    Regards

    Robert

    Reply from Wladimir Palant:

Robert, Firefox 4 isn’t out yet – and won’t be for several more months. Nevertheless, Adblock Plus is fully compatible with the current Firefox 4 betas and it will of course be compatible with Firefox 4 final when it is out. I don’t know where you got the idea that Adblock Plus wouldn’t support Firefox 4.

  11. EP · 2010-08-05 23:32 · #

well Wladimir, I think Robert spoke too soon about ABP not working under FF4. Heck, he doesn’t know which beta of Firefox 4 he’s using since he didn’t specifically say earlier.

I’m currently using the latest candidate build of Firefox 4 beta 3 which should be due out next week to the public. Hopefully the stable and latest dev builds of ABP will work with the upcoming FF4.0 b3 browser. Mozilla plans to release some more betas of Firefox 4 before finalizing it.

btw – Firefox 4 beta 2 does not load under Win2000 but Mozilla has rectified that problem in the upcoming beta 3 release.

Unfortunately, Mozilla requires me to mark Adblock Plus as compatible again on each alpha/beta release (and not too early). Now that I am back from vacation I’ve done that. Stable version should work within an hour, development builds tomorrow.

As Firefox4 beta3 is more or less officially available now, when will the ABP be compatible?

    thx,

    Hi,
What about Firefox 4 beta 3? when do you plan to release an updated add on?

    Tnx :)
