Adblock Plus and (a little) more

Fennec support and signed builds · 2009-12-03 04:00 by Wladimir Palant

Thanks to the work of Fabrice Desre the current Adblock Plus development build is compatible with Fennec (a.k.a. Firefox Mobile). It won’t work in 1.0 Beta 5, you need a nightly build or Beta 6 once it is out. As it is now, the support is very basic — the options are limited to choosing a filter subscription, you can only select one. You cannot tweak filter rules and you cannot whitelist websites, for such “advanced” things you will need to copy over your patterns.ini file from the desktop. Choosing a filter subscription on first run works fine but that page isn’t meant for small screens — this will be improved later.

In unrelated news, development builds are signed again. Firefox 3.5.6 (and current nightly builds of course) will even identify the extension as signed in the confirmation window. Firefox 3.0.x and 3.5.5 will sadly fail to do so.

I noticed that the official Maemo repositories contain an “Adblock Plus” package, labeled as “Ad blocking plugin for Maemo Browser”. Currently has version number “1maemo0-8”. I suspect this represents something entirely different than the official Adblock Plus add-on, which AFAIK doesn’t exist for the built-in Maemo browser, just Fennec. Can you comment on this?

    Reply from Wladimir Palant:

It is their own adaptation of Adblock Plus. It has Adblock Plus code inside yet the user interface is entirely different (their browser comes without XUL support). I think they are still injecting Adblock Plus user interface clues into the webpage because that’s the only way to show them in that browser – with the side effect that the webpage can easily detect them (at the very least). All in all, I would stick with Fennec.
