Adblock Plus and (a little) more

New web tools for Adblock Plus · 2006-08-20 01:27 by Wladimir Palant

I opened a new web site section called Web tools where I put the three web-based tools for Adblock Plus users I wrote recently. The tools are:

  • Find useless filters: an updated version of the redundancy checker that was discussed in the forum a while ago. This tool tests your filter list looking for filters that can be removed. The current version supports the complete filter syntax of Adblock Plus 0.7.1 and gives you immediately a new list without the redundant filters.
  • Subscription link factory: generates links using the new abp: protocol (Adblock Plus 0.7.1.2 and higher) that can be put into any web page. A click on this link will open the “Add new subscription” window with subscription’s title and location already filled in — the user only needs to click OK to confirm. While creating these links is easy enough without this tool, the tool takes care of properly encoding special characters.
  • Disable Adblock Plus on all bookmarked pages: this is an answer to a request in the forum. The tool reads a bookmarks file, extracts all links from it and creates a list with the exception rules necessary to whitelist all those links. You can choose whether you want to whitelist only the exact pages the bookmarks show to or complete sites.

That doesn’t look like a lot yet but I hope that this section will fill up over time.

Oh, neat. My Python version of the whitelist creator thing wasn’t very good. Even if I had made it usable over the web, I don’t know any JavaScript, so the only way I could do it would be to upload it, and that would be bad.

You should make it remove duplicates from the generated list, especially when you’re whitelisting the complete sites. And sort it. Sorting is always fun. :)
