Adblock Plus and (a little) more

Let's celebrate - 20 years open source! · 2017-11-02 16:35 by Jan Oczenasek

Without the open-source community, there would be no Adblock Plus. Today’s most popular ad blocker was created from and within the open source community, one of the most innovative communities of the 21st century. Open source will celebrate its 20th anniversary in 2018 and of course, we’ll join the party. Adblock Plus is the #1 ad blocker in the world and a big part of our success is due to Adblock Plus being open source with a strong and loyal community.

With that said, we are proud to announce: we sponsor the Open Source Initiative.

The OSI’s job is to review open source licenses and make sure they meet “open-source community norms and expectations.” We know the open-source community extremely well, so this is a job we’re well qualified to contribute to. Besides this work, the OSI will coordinate the celebrations around the 20th anniversary of open source. We are happy that an organization that keeps the open-source a community-driven and open project exists.

“With Adblock Plus and Flattr we want to contribute to a sustainable, fair and open web for creators and consumers. So it is only logical to provide these products as open source.” said Till Faida, our colleague and the co-founder of eyeo.

Our company relies on open-source software. The backbone of Adblock Plus, the easylist, is open source and our software gives the user the freedom to create their own lists or contribute to existing lists. Within the company we use open-source software to communicate, develop and work. Fellow OSI sponsors besides Adblock Plus include, as you might imagine, other open-source success stories like RedHat, Mozilla, The Linux Foundation and GitHub. We are looking forward to sharing our company’s and individual open-source stories and celebrating with colleagues around the world.
