Adblock Plus and (a little) more

Adblock Plus integrated into Maxthon browser · 2015-02-11 09:43 by Job Plas

We are very happy to announce that Adblock Plus and Maxthon have entered a long-term commitment and partnership, the centerpiece of which will be Adblock Plus directly integrated into Maxthon. Adblock Plus, the world’s most popular adblocker, and Maxthon Cloud Browser, known for its superior speed and high performance, have teamed up to bring Adblock Plus to Maxthon browsers. The end result? The first browser that blocks ads right out of the box.

Over the last months, both companies worked hard on bringing Adblock Plus to Maxthon. And we’ve succeeded, innovating Adblock Plus from an extension to a deeply integrated feature of the Maxthon browser. For all users all over the world (except China), Adblock Plus will come enabled by default. In China, users can enable Adblock Plus in one click. This cooperation effectively removes annoying ads for millions of Maxthon users.

Today is also a big win for our Acceptable Ads initiative – where we unblock a few unobtrusive ad formats so publishers can still monetize the audience using Adblock Plus. By expanding the reach of Adblock Plus, we will be able to inspire the broken ad industry to move away from blinking banners, video ads, pop-ups and -unders and all other horrifying ad formats … and on to better ads.

Today we increased our leverage, today is a big win for the user.

Is the maxthon code open source?

    Reply from Sebastian Noack:

Our code, that is libadblockplus, which Maxthon integrated into their browser is open source and available under the GPLv3. However, Maxthon itself is not our code, and will remain closed source.

I installed the latest version of Maxthon, adblok works fine, then I logged into my account, sync bookmarks, etc. and adblok stopped working, when I logout from my account, it’s again works fine. How to fix it?

    Reply from Job Plas:

Is this still the case? If so, please report this in the forum here, then we’ll make sure it’ll be communicated to Maxthon.

Congtatulations! Was curious, why is ABP ‘opt-in’ for Chinese users?

    Reply from Job Plas:

Because China’s legal system is very different, we integrated it differently too.

I like the logo, it reminds me of the Wawel Dragon as depicted in Cosmographia Universalis by Sebastian Münster.

its ok but, no work on google…. on android…

    Reply from Job Plas:

As we point out in our issue tracker in issue 2098 , on Android we haven’t been able to tackle element-hiding and https-blocking yet. Both cause those ads to show if you opted-out of Acceptable Ads.

If this happened on the desktop version, please report it in our dedicated Maxthon forum, we’ll take a look then!

The Ads pop up when I’m trying to read something, or look at an item are intrusive and annoying especially when trying to concentrate on a topic, or purchase over the internet. I understand advertisers trying to promote their products,. How-ever, they could put a side note for a few seconds stating they have related products based on your item search, or topic of interest and then go away and stay away. That allows the user to look if they want to.
I find it particularly annoying when I am trying hard to find information on products. These Ads pop up in the middle of the page obstructing the item or literature I’m focusing on. They take up time closing them only to have them come back when scrolling a page. It is rude. It is an invasion of my time, and privacy. This is my computer and I did not invite them to interfere my research. There has to be away they can advertise without invading people’s time, and disrupting the page they are reading or watching. I have been on auction sites where I have needed to focus / concentrate on bids and closing times, only to have Ad’s pop up in front of count down clocks or bids entered…

    Reply from Job Plas:

Exactly, and Adblock Plus protects you against these obtrusive ads.
