This release adds support for opening noteworthy notifications in a new tab (core#162, webex#162) that would otherwise go unnoticed. Such notifications will not be shown to users on large scale deployments of Adblock Plus (webext#171).

It also removes warning messages that are shown in the browser’s developer tools when installing the extension (webext#174) and when visiting websites (webext#173).

The last couple version updates the release notes have lagged by as much as several dates before appearing online at https://adblockplus.org/releases/. If possible, can they go back to being available online when the new version is available to users?

For example, 3.8.4 has been available for a day now and the release notes for 3.8.3 were just added at the time.

    Thanks.

As far as I’m aware of, we’ve always waited until the update is available across all major platforms before publishing the release announcement.

Lately, however, we’ve been seeing significant delays on the Chrome Web Store due to them reviewing every single update. Those reviews can take multiple days or even weeks for each update.

Therefore what I’d imagine we could do is publish the release announcement immediately but with an added note while the update is not available on all platforms. That way we could publish the announcements as soon as possible without causing any confusion due to some people not getting the update yet.

Hi Thomas, hi everyone @ ABP Team!

I also asked myself the same question about this gap between the notification of a new version and its release announcement.

I fully agree that it is always problematic to get a browser notification that an update is available and not having a description of that update! And not everyone is using the Chrome Web Store: if I’m not using a Chromium-based browser (I personally use Waterfox as my primary browser), I don’t understand why I should wait for Google’s review to know what’s new in the new ABP release.

So, I would approve if you could post the release announcement immediately, even with an additional note, so that everyone who receives a notification can easily and immediately know what’s new :-) . (This would be my preference…)

Or, if you prefer to wait for Google’s review (or for other reasons), don’t let browsers tell us there is an update until the entire process is complete… So we will be notified about the update at the same time you will publish the release announcement ;-) …

    Best regards,
    Johan
