Install Adblock Plus 2.6.3 for Firefox
This is a bugfix release with the focus on stability.
Changes
- Worked around a Firefox bug preventing filters from being saved in Firefox 22 and older on Windows (issue 530).
- Default context menu is no longer overridden on the toolbar icon if a left click would result in the same action already (issue 449).
- Fixed: Adblock Plus toolbar icon appears delayed (issue 293).
- Fixed: Warning shows up in console concerning use of setUserData (only resolved for Firefox 32 and higher, issue 47).
- Fixed: Bogus tooltip on the “Slow” column in Filter Preferences (issue 594).

Hey…I see you’re doing outstanding job for the Firefox adblock plus…but what about IE adblock plus?

The release is being prepared. Testing for IE really sucks, each IE version and each Windows version behave differently, we fix one issue but find another one instead.

Tell me, when will you fix startup problem on Firefox? that’s really foolish you choose let ABP not to load completely in order to get a little speed up, but bypass AD and tracker!
I am not satisfy with your change in 2.6 at all, How much time we have to wait for a fix!?

Feel free to switch extensions.adblockplus.please_kill_startup_performance preference to true (https://adblockplus.org/en/preferences#please_kill_startup_performance). While this doesn’t make all the processing synchronous, an important part of it will be.

OK, I tested what you said, but I still not sure.
So, do you mean even enabled “please_kill_startup_performance“preference to true can block some unwanted content, it is still not as effective as 2.5.1 version? or if this method can provide the same protection level as 2.5.1 offered?
I think must people would rather to choose full security than a little ex. only 1~2 second speed up, at least I would, so please tell me the answer, thanks.Reply from Wladimir Palant:
Adblock Plus 2.6 changed two things: filter processing got asynchronous and reading files from disk uses a different approach (that part was already asynchronous before). The preference essentially reverts the first change. However, the way data is being read from disk now it is apparently more likely to be done after Firefox already started up (something that can happen in Firefox 2.5.1 as well).

And how about Chrome? seems to have the same problem, but is that because limitation of Chrome? Also Chrome version did not have clear detail as well as Firefox what it blocked at the current page, is that also limitation of Chrome?
And Chrome have a button to update all list at once, while Firefox can separate update list one by one, can’t you provide each feature to Chrome and Firefox? At least offer a update all list at once button will be a good choice to Firefox I think.

Chrome extensions generally cannot block browser startup so the behavior there is always what you see in Firefox now. Blockable items is something that we want to implement in Chrome as well eventually, see https://issues.adblockplus.org/ticket/154.
We are working on a redesign of the preferences page that will be used both for Chrome and Firefox. Updating all lists at once is possible in Firefox via Ctrl-Shift-T shortcut key but this isn’t something you should normally need. Please trust the automatic update mechanism, it will do the right thing.

I tested 2.5.1, 2.6.1, and dev build 2.6.1.3823 with please_kill_startup_performance=true. Under some real world and artificial conditions (FF29, several Windows machines). I did not detect 2.5.1 missing anything during startup. Both 2.6.1 and 2.6.1.3823 always missed things during startup, and missed exactly the same things.
So my impression is that uses who want correct blocking during startup should be sticking to 2.5.1 and avoiding the later releases (2.6.x, …) until you guys can come up with a full fix. We can assume you intend to, yes?
I notice you say that 2.5.1 can miss things, and I accept my tests may not have covered those scenarios. Could you give us a better feel for what the conditions would be? Do you agree or disagree with the “stick to 2.5.1 for now” approach?

Thank you for your kind response, I realized the part of your response at the 4th floor.
So set “please_kill_startup_performance“ to true only affect filter processing only, but reading data is another thing. To be honest I still not understand do you mean that protection which 2.5.1 provided is the same with 2.6.x if change setting.
You wrote that with change setting “makes it less likely that ads will appear on the first page” , but sounds like that it still has chance get AD bypassed at first page(I mean known AD), because I did not notice if unwanted content is bypassed on 2.5.1 while loading first page, I want to know do you mean this happen on 2.6.x only or 2.5.1 has the same problem? if so, is 2.5.1 still more hardend than 2.6.x or no?

Since GottaQ2 point out that even set “extensions.adblockplus.please_kill_startup_performance” preference to true is not sufficient to block AD, until your team can complete resolve the problem, at least work as well as 2.5.1, I will stick with 2.5.1 and also recommend other people not to upgrade to the new version.

Alas, as GottaQ2 said 2.6.3 doesn’t work any better with the please_kill_startup_performance pref set to true.
2.5.1 did work.
It doesn’t seem like the ABP team intends to put more work into getting the newer versions behave like 2.5.1, so I don’t know what to do.
It won’t be possible to stay on 2.5.1 for years given how fast Firefox evolves.
I guess I’ll be looking for alternatives to ABP since I can’t let all my pinned tabs load trackers every time I open Firefox ;_;
