Adblock Plus and (a little) more

Adblock Plus 1.0 for iOS released · 2015-09-30 10:48 by Felix Dahlke

We’re happy to announce that Apple has finally approved the first version of Adblock Plus for iOS – you can now get it on the App Store. (It took forever, we submitted shortly after it became possible to submit iOS 9 apps.)

We’re using the new content blocking API introduced in iOS 9 to provide an ad blocker for Safari on iOS, with a content blocking list generated from EasyList.

The content blocking API does, however, have some limitations that make it difficult to build a decent ad blocker with it. In addition, the inability to do any sort of UI integration makes it difficult to provide the usual Adblock Plus features in a usable way. That’s why we have a second product on iOS: Adblock Browser, a browser with ad blocking built in, which is not subject to the limitations of the content blocking API. I suggest you just try both, and use whatever suits you best.

Hey, I can’t install the app on my ipod touch 5g, it says its not supported. Please add the ipod touch to the acceptable device installs list (or whatever its called).

    Thank you.

    Reply from Felix Dahlke:

Sorry for the delay. I suspect the iPod 5g is a 32-bit device, Apple made us arbitrarily restrict the app to 64-bit devices :( See my response to The Prisoner below for more details.

Do not block ads for Ukrainian and Russian sites. Correct this please.

Fof example look at this website:
    http://samlab.ws

    Reply from Felix Dahlke:

The app currently doesn’t include the necessary list for that (RU Adlist), we only have EasyList for now. The reason for that is that Apple limits the number of rules, and EasyList is already quite large. But we’re working hard on reducing the size so we can add language specific lists.

Agree with xifasufа about Russian and Ukrainian advertisement content. No blocking at all yet.

    Reply from Felix Dahlke:

We’re working on that, please see my response to xifasufа for more details.

Is this a joke?? iPad3 is not supported? A 3 year old hardware cant run this app??? Pleeeeeeease!

    Reply from Felix Dahlke:

It would actually run just fine according to our tests. However, Apple doesn’t allow us to upload the app to the App Store if we don’t restrict it to 64-bit devices. If you would build the app from source, it’d work.

Even if I knew hiw to compile it, I wouldnt have any idea how to feed it into my ipad.. Any clues?

    Reply from Felix Dahlke:

As of Xcode 7, you don’t need to join the Apple developer program (at 99$ per year) anymore to deploy apps on your own device, you can do that for free. What you do of course need is a Mac running OS X to use Xcode. And you will have to make one small change: You have to add a 32-bit slice in the build settings.

I can’t really recommend doing this, it’s quite a hassle… But I did want to point out that it is technically possible.

    To Felix Dahlke…
You said: “The app currently doesn’t include the necessary list for that (RU Adlist)… The reason for that is that Apple limits the number of rules…”.

But see in App Store “Adguard” (https://adguard.com/) – it included too many rules (including rules on ABP) and works successfully! It blocks Ukrainian and Russian sites!
