Adblock Plus and (a little) more
Second Adblock Plus 1.1.1 release candidate · 2009-08-09 15:12 by Wladimir Palant
The current development build (Adblock Plus 1.1.0+.2009080913) is again a release candidate for Adblock Plus 1.1.1, the release should happen in a few days. Changes:
- Made Adblock Plus initialization more bullet-proof so that neither FoxyProxy nor Sxipper extension can disrupt it.
- Added ChinaList as recommended subscription.
- Fixed an issue with the list of blockable items: if page is loaded while the list of blockable items is open the list would sometimes be incomplete.

I am trying to add AdBlock Plus to SeaMonkey 1.1.17 running on Windows 7 (RTM).
The installation repeatedly fails with the message “ Install Script Not Found”
Thank you very much for your assistance.
Reply from Wladimir Palant:
SeaMonkey 1.1 is no longer supported and this is SeaMonkey’s way of telling you this. You can either install Adblock Plus 1.0.2 (https://addons.mozilla.org/addons/versions/1865) or upgrade to SeaMonkey 2.0 Beta 1. I recommend the latter – SeaMonkey 2.0 should be way more reliable, despite its beta status. This is especially true when you use extensions.

does abp have userscript version so that it can run on non-gecko browser?
Reply from Wladimir Palant:
No. Adblock Plus works very differently from a user script.

I woke up this morning to find that none of the ads are being blocked. I find out there is an update (1.1->1.1.1), so I install that and still nothing… ads are still there.
wtf? this is with the latest version of firefox too, (3.5.2).

I have noticed that the recent update of 1.1.1 is causing continuous and sever crashes that are unpredictable. I have not been able to narrow down why as it happens on just about any kind of page and at random but it seems that invocation of any type of Ajax or GUI scripts with ABP active will cause a crash. Now if you disable ABP using the statusbar menu item, it decreases the crashes to less frequent but disabling it in addons or completely removing it, stops the crashes all together. Now I am not sure if its a conflict with other addons or just another introduction of problems since the last bad release but its happening. I like to use it and want to keep using it but not if I unpredictably and constantly have my browser crashing and losing work, data and so on. Any ideas what’s going on? TIA.
Reply from Wladimir Palant:
See http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Firefox+crashes – if you give me the address of the crash report I might be able help you. Typically crashes as you describe them are caused by plug-ins, especially Java (though Flash will cause them occasionally as well). So updating Flash and Java as the very first thing is recommended.

Wladimir, please don’t recommend SeaMonkey 2.0 Beta 1 to end users. It’s a beta for a reason, and this situation often ends up in more support requests in part because many extensions are not compatible (because it’s not stable yet).
Reply from Wladimir Palant:
Yes, I am aware of the problems. However, I hope you don’t think that I chose this course of action lightly. What are the alternatives? I cannot continue supporting Gecko 1.8.1, especially not in its non-toolkit variant. It requires tons of hacks and this kind of hacks need very thorough testing. That testing I simply cannot get, too few people are using SeaMonkey 1.1. Not to mention that even with the hacks I still get reports about SeaMonkey not choosing the locale correctly for the extension – and there is absolutely nothing I can do about it. The fact that Adblock Plus installation requires administrative privileges doesn’t help either.
I cannot tell people to stop using Adblock Plus until SeaMonkey 2.0 is released – this will take at least three more months, way too long. I cannot recommend using Adblock Plus 1.0.2 either, this is a temporary solution at best. Adblock Plus 1.1 introduced some very significant improvements to the filter syntax. I expect all filter list authors to start using those very soon, so anybody using Adblock Plus 1.0.2 will soon notice that “this stupid Adblock isn’t working properly again”. Finally, I can recommend switching to Firefox. But people using SeaMonkey usually chose it for a reason, so I will insult them without having helped anybody.
Any other suggestions?

Hello Wladimir ,
I’m using Firefox(Minefield ) 3.7a1pre
(Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.9.3a1pre) Gecko/20090815 Minefield/3.7a1pre (.NET CLR 3.5.30729))
and adblock plus 1.1.1 is not supported in this version
could you add support for this version ?
Reply from Wladimir Palant:
I marked Adblock Plus 1.1.1 as compatible on AMO – it should install in the current trunk nightlies again now. Next development build will also be marked as compatible.

Hi
I’m using adblock plus 1.1.1 on Windows 7 with Firefox 3, but since installing FF 3.5.2, everytime I try and play Scrabble on Facebook (flash app) I get a continuous blanking of the board – onoffonoffonoff… Very annoying, and after extensive testing it seems to point to adblock plus I’m afraid :(
Any thoughts?
Reply from Wladimir Palant:
This has likely to do with the “Tabs on Flash and Java” option – https://adblockplus.org/en/faq_features#objecttabs. If disabling it doesn’t fix the issue you should have a look at this: https://adblockplus.org/en/getting_started#false-positives

Hi there – was just wondering if you were working on anything to use with the new Google Chrome. Thanks for your time.
Reply from Wladimir Palant:
No, certainly not. The reasons are pretty much the same as here: https://adblockplus.org/blog/adblock-for-internet-explorer-is-not-an-option

Hello Wladimir,
Recently, http://my.msn.com/ won’t load with Adblock Plus 1.1.1 enabled in Firefox 3.5.3.
It will load if Adblock Plus 1.1.1 is disabled.
Have you had reports from anyone having a similar problem while attempting to load web pages while Adblock Plus 1.1.1 is enabled? Do you have a solution to this problem?
Norm
Reply from Wladimir Palant:
No, I haven’t heard about that but I am the wrong one to ask anyway. See https://adblockplus.org/en/getting_started#false-positives for the reason of this issue and how to deal with it.

I want to add to my message (above).
I’m using WXP SR2. Firefox won’t re-start with Adblock Plus 1.1.1 installed. It remains in memory, but clicking on it’s icon will not bring the program up again. However, after loading Task Manager I observe that every time I click on the Firefox icon additional memory is used (but Firefox doesn’t re-start).
If I end the Firefox process, I can re-start Firefox. After removing Adblock plus 1.1.1, Firefox will open normally.

ABP 1.1.1 is incompatilbe with FF nighties. Someone posted the same issue before and the developer said it is installable. However, it is uninstallable in 3.6bX and 3.7a1. (3.6b1pre was OK.)
Reply from Wladimir Palant:
You have to install from https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1865, installing from disk will not work. Either that or install a development build: https://adblockplus.org/devbuilds/adblockplus/

I bought a brand new clean system that came with Windows 7. After running all the Windows updates, I installed the latest version of Firefox (3.5.5) and used MozBackup to copy my Firefox profile from my old computer to this new one.
I noticed that no ads were being blocked, so I opened up TOOLS -> ADD ONS in Firefox, clicked on AdBlock Plus’ preferences, and it the addons window froze, requiring a force quit for that window.
I then uninstalled AdBlockPlus with no problem. When I then tried to re-install it fresh, I got the following error message:
Firefox could not install the file at
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/downloads/latest/1865/addon-1865-latest.xpi?src=addondetail
because: Unexpected installation error
Review the Error Console log for more details.
-203
So there’s definitely something incompatible with AdBlock Plus 1.1.1 and Windows 7! Confirmed this on a friend’s Windows 7 system too.
Any ideas?
Reply from Wladimir Palant:
I don’t know what MozBackup does with Adblock Plus preferences. As to your installation error, see http://kb.mozillazine.org/Unable_to_install_themes_or_extensions_-_Firefox. To be absolutely clear: Adblock Plus installs in Firefox, as long as Firefox works correctly in Windows 7 Adblock Plus does as well.

DISREGARD PREVIOUS MESSAGE. The problem was not with AdBlock Plus 1.1.1, but rather with MozBackup 4.9.
When I restored my profile, it corrupted the extensions.ini, extensions.cache, and extensions.rdf files in the C:\Users\(username)\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\(xxxxxxxx).default directory.
To solve the problem with add-ons, close Firefox completely, delete those three files, and then restart. Everything should be back to normal, including AdBlock Plus!

I’m using flashblock (1.5.12a2) with adblock plus( 1.1.1 )
i have seen a problem about integration of these both extensions
because i think flashblock must wait adblock complete its job
then it mush block survival of flashes.
For example in a web site there is a flash advertisement
adblock trys to block it but because of flashblock makes it
visible ( with a huge play button ) adblock couldn’t disapear that
part from screen.
To see a demonstration :
install flashblock (1.5.12a2) with adblock plus( 1.1.1 )
add “.softreklam.com/” to adblock’s rule list
visit http://www.oyuncehennemi.com/index.php
you will see a blocked flash advertisement on the other hand
it must be deleted before blocking
Reply from Wladimir Palant:
Yes, Flashblock and Adblock Plus don’t play nice together. The problem needs to be solved on Flashblock’s side but so far I didn’t have the time to submit a patch.

“
Unfortunately due to the way Flashblock is designed. Our code fires
very early in the page load process. There is no way we can delay it
until Adblock Plus has a chance to work.

Reply from Wladimir Palant:
Which is basically what I said above though “no way” is slightly exaggerated.

Next release should be anytime soon now?
Reply from Wladimir Palant:
Don’t know, why? So far there were no changes that are significant enough to justify a release. Though it looks like I’ll be adding Fennec support soon. Is there something in particular that you are waiting for?
