Adblock Plus and (a little) more

Preparing to release Adblock Plus 0.7.5.4 · 2008-04-04 23:31 by Wladimir Palant

A new Adblock Plus 0.7.5.3+ development build (2008040421) and a development build for K-Meleon have been uploaded. Due to locale changes, only English, German and Russian locales are currently available. This is a release candidate for Adblock Plus 0.7.5.4.

Changes

  • Default keyboard shortcuts have been changed to avoid conflicts in Firefox 3 and Thunderbird
  • Remove “Check banner links” option (forum thread)
  • Hebrew (he-IL) translation added
  • Support for Songbird 0.4 added, now almost everything should work like in Firefox
  • Songbird 0.2/0.3 support dropped
  • Added support for eMusic Remote 1.0
  • Whitelisting rules now apply to element hiding rules as well (bug 14814) (won’t work properly in Firefox 3, see known issues)
  • Added support for new content types previously listed as “other” (Firefox 3 only): XBL bindings, link pings, XML HTTP requests, object subrequests and DTDs (corresponding filter options are xbl, ping, xmlhttprequest, object-subrequest and dtd respectively)
  • Fixed: Links in Adblock Plus dialogs don’t open (Thunderbird only)
  • Fixed filter editing issues caused by landing of bug 398135
  • Fixed: input focus not put back to the filter list after editing a list (Minefield only)
  • Fixed: The entry “No blockable items on current page” in the list of filter suggestions should not be selectable
  • Fixed: Error messages when inserting filters in Preferences
  • Fixed: Account for new XUL iframe behavior in Firefox 3 (documents load in invisible iframes as well now)
  • Support for Moblin browser added — untested
  • Content policy now returns “blocked based on server” to trigger special handling in Firefox 3
  • “Flash borders” in list of blockable elements will stay longer (forum thread)
  • K-Meleon: Done some major code refactoring
  • K-Meleon: Added support for K-Meleon 1.5 (currently alpha)
  • K-Meleon: Dropped support for K-Meleon 1.0
  • K-Meleon: Status bar icon now reacts to middle-clicks and has a context menu (K-Meleon 1.5 only)

Known issues

  • Element hiding hits are not always registered in Firefox 3, this also prevents whitelisting rules to apply to element hiding (bug 425057)
  • Songbird: Context menu doesn’t always show up in Songbird, consequently not all items can be blocked via context menu
  • eMusic Remote: Links in Adblock Plus dialogs load in current tab instead of opening a new one
  • K-Meleon: Context menu entries not always shown
  • K-Meleon: Not working with K-Meleon 1.5 Alpha 2 due to a K-Meleon bug (bug 978)

Hey, thank you very much Vladrimir. We are waiting for this release :)

  2. chewey · 2008-04-05 01:48 · #

Don’t you think @@-for-#-rules alone does justify a major version increase?

    Reply from Wladimir Palant:

Definitely – now if that feature would work… Unfortunately, in Firefox 3 we have to start from zero with element hiding again (I don’t really believe that the Mozilla bug I filed will be fixed).

Is this compatible with the newest beta version of firefox? (3.0b5)

Is this compatible with the newest beta version of firefox (3.0b5)?

    !

    Reply from Wladimir Palant:

I think trying would take less time than asking. Yes, it is marked compatible with Firefox 3.0b5. I cannot mark it compatible with the final release though, addons.mozilla.org doesn’t allow this.

I just submitted this to Digg. Thanks for the hard work!

For the benefit of those above, it is NOT compatible with Firefox 3 Beta 5 – it fails the compatibility check on installation

  7. David Russell · 2008-04-05 18:03 · #

Hmm, my mistake there is actually another version in there (none of which are the one mentioned in the post however) which although it gives an error on install seems to work with 3.0beta5

    Trivial bug (regression):
    1. Detach the list of blockable items and close it
    2. Hit Ctrl+Shift+V twice
Expected result: At step 2, the list of blockable items displayed and hidden again.
Actual result: It’s displayed – hiding still requires Ctrl+Shift+B, though.

    Related issue:
    1. Hit Ctrl+Shift+V
    2. Click into Firefox’s main window
    3. Hit Ctrl+Shift+V again
Expected result: After step 3, the list of blockable items is focused (again).
Actual result: The list is hidden instead.

    Reply from Wladimir Palant:

Right, I forgot about this bug – the shortcut key in the “blockable items” was forgotten when all the keys were made configurable. Thanks for reminding me, I will fix it.

How about making Ctrl+w close the preferences window when it has focus?

    Reply from Wladimir Palant:

Not a good idea – it is a dialog, it has a Cancel and an OK button. Which one of them should be triggered by Ctrl+W. I better stay with Esc and Ctrl+Enter.

Will this ADP (dev build) upgrade with newer versions automatically?
    Thanks in advance

    Reply from Wladimir Palant:

    It will.

    Reply from Wladimir Palant:

Meaning newer releases of course – newer development build always have to be installed manually.

Thank you so, so much for the effort. Was waiting for it very eagerly.

Please…… Fix Adblock so it will work on Firefox 3.0.
I kinda got screwed into updating to the thing.I don’t like it.
One of the worst things, is my Adblock is gone.
That was the main reason that I used it.

I really wish you guys would build one for I.E.7……..
I can’t find anything even close to it.

    Reply from Wladimir Palant:

Adblock Plus is working fine with Firefox 3, so unless you are talking about the old Adblock which is abandoned…

    Wladimir,
Thank you for the info. But I have a couple of problems here.
One being that I run the free version.( I can’t remember if the
“Plus” was a paid version or not.)I’m on disability and can’t afford a paid program.
Also I’m a novice and I don’t understand most of your instructions. :(
Can you tell me,is there a way ( besides “Restore”) to get my old FF.and Adblock back ?
I don’t even know what the “Filter List” is.Or how to back it up.
Most of this stuff goes right over my head. :>
But I REALLY appreciate your trying to help me Wladimir.

    Reply from Wladimir Palant:

Adblock Plus is free, you can get it at https://addons.mozilla.org/addon/1865. You install it, select a filter subscription that seems to meet your needs (depends on the language of the sites you usually visit) – and forget about it. You don’t need the “complicated stuff”.
