Adblock Plus and (a little) more

More Firefox 3 fixes · 2008-03-21 23:53 by Wladimir Palant

A new Adblock Plus 0.7.5.3+ development build (2008032122) has been uploaded. Due to locale changes, only English, German and Russian locales are currently available.

Installation

https://adblockplus.org/devbuilds/

Changes

  • Hebrew (he-IL) translation added
  • Support for Songbird 0.4 added, now almost everything should work like in Firefox
  • Songbird 0.2/0.3 support dropped
  • Added support for eMusic Remote 1.0
  • Whitelisting rules now apply to element hiding rules as well (bug 14814) (won’t work properly in Firefox 3, see known issues)
  • Added support for new content types previously listed as “other” (Firefox 3 only): XBL bindings, link pings, XML HTTP requests, object subrequests and DTDs (corresponding filter options are xbl, ping, xmlhttprequest, object-subrequest and dtd respectively)
  • Fixed: Links in Adblock Plus dialogs don’t open (Thunderbird only)
  • Fixed filter editing issues caused by landing of bug 398135
  • Fixed: input focus not put back to the filter list after editing a list (Minefield only)
  • Fixed: The entry “No blockable items on current page” in the list of filter suggestions should not be selectable
  • Fixed: Error messages when inserting filters in Preferences
  • Fixed: Account for new XUL iframe behavior in Firefox 3 (documents load in invisible iframes as well now)
  • Support for Moblin browser added — untested

Known issues

  • Element hiding hits are not always registered in Firefox 3, this always prevents whitelisting rules to apply to element hiding
  • Songbird: Context menu doesn’t always show up in Songbird, consequently not all items can be blocked via context menu
  • Songbird: Status bar icon doesn’t react to clicks (Songbird bug 6719)
  • eMusic Remote: Links in Adblock Plus dialogs load in current tab instead of opening a new one

    Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.9b5pre) Gecko/2008032112 Minefield/3.0b5pre

Minefield could not install the file at

    http://adblockplus.org/devbuilds/adblockplus-0.7.5.3+.2008032122-en-US.xpi

because: Not a valid install package
    -207

    Reply from Wladimir Palant:

See the answer from Fox below – the installation package is fine, something went wrong with your download. Maybe clearing your cache and installing again will work (on the other hand, maybe something on your computer like firewall software is corrupting the download – then it won’t help).

“because: Not a valid install package
    -207”

I think that is some cache issue, try again.
Or save that file 1st, and then drag it to Firefox Addons window from desktop.

“Or save that file 1st, and then drag it to Firefox Addons window from desktop.”
    That helped, thanks

I get this error in error console in firefox3 trunk

Error: uncaught exception: [Exception… “Not enough arguments [nsIClipboard.hasDataMatchingFlavors]” nsresult: “0×80570001 (NS_ERROR_XPC_NOT_ENOUGH_ARGS)” location: “JS frame :: chrome://adblockplus/content/settings.js :: fillContext :: line 861” data: no]

I’m not sure yet what is triggering it.

    Reply from Wladimir Palant:

Thank you, fixed that issue – it was breaking the code responsible for disabling “Paste” in the context menu.

Yes something is definitely weird. When I go to initially install the plugin via drag and drop to menu bar, the add on manager thinks the add on is 4 GB ?

    Reply from Wladimir Palant:

That’s a bug in the Extension Manager – it fails to recognize the size of the download, and somewhere along the way it translates -1 into 4 GB.

When I try to install it, either directly or downloading and then opening it, I always get the message “Adblock Plus 0.7.5.3+.2008032513 could not be installed because it is not compatible with Minefield 3.0pre.”
    I use: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.9pre) Gecko/2008032805 Minefield/3.0pre

    Reply from Wladimir Palant:

This development build was released before 3.0b5, it isn’t marked compatible. Either wait for the next one or go to about:config and add a boolean preference extensions.checkCompatibility with value false (don’t forget to remove it later when it is no longer needed).

Please, update the package for Firefox 3.0b5 (not b5pre)

  8. Jamus · 2008-04-04 18:57 · #

Thanks for the product. It makes the web tolerable again. Glad to see the Firefox3 beta devs coming along too…

Thank god for ff 3 beta dev builds! I honestly can not understand how anyone can browse anywhere without adblocker, yesterday was a torture..

When I try to install the AdBlock Plus to Firefox 3.0, I get the following message:

Firefox could not install the file at https:/addons.mozilla.org/en-us/firefox/downloads/file/30901/adblock_plus-0.7.5.5-fx+tb+sm.xpi

    because: unexpected installation error
Review the Error Console for more details
    -203

Where do I find the error console and how do I fix this problem?

    Thanks!

    Paul

I’m getting the same message as Paul. Cleared temp files, saved file first, still no luck. Help!

    Reply from Wladimir Palant:

I can honestly not give you more information than what you find in the Mozillazine knowledge base (http://kb.mozillazine.org/Unable_to_install_themes_or_extensions_-_Firefox). You can try Firefox support (http://support.mozilla.com/) or Mozillazine forums (http://forums.mozillazine.org/) if you don’t find the answer there.

  12. Stephen · 2009-06-22 18:22 · #

Corrupt extension files were the culprit. I removed ‘extensions.ini’, ‘extensions.cache’ and ‘extensions.rdf’. Installation was then able to complete successfully. Thanks Wladimir!
