Adblock Plus and (a little) more

Development builds removed · 2006-07-01 02:45 by Wladimir Palant

Adblock Plus 0.7.1 is in AMO’s review queue, they will hopefully approve it soon. I removed the development builds, there isn’t much point in testing now.

Edit: Single-language builds for 0.7.1 are online, you can download them if you like — simply replace 0.7.0.2 in the link by 0.7.1.

where in the adblock plus xpi is the subscription text in the add subscription window, so i can manually add my list to the default lists included?

    Reply from Wladimir Palant:

It is inside chrome/adblockplus.jar (a ZIP file), there in content/subscriptions.rdf.

0.7.1 is sweet with subscriptions, how about adding my site’s list as a subscription?

If you add the subscription please contact me as I have security measures in place to stop spam-bots from crawling my site that I’d prefer not to discuss in public.

The French list blocked my AW Stats script from showing the frames.

This list looks good. However, I am only recommending subscriptions that are supported – meaning at least an obvious way to submit false positives. Do you allow feedback somehow?

I always listen to feedback from people and I rigorously test out Adblock if I think there might be a complication. Right now people can email me directly via my contact page. If there are any suggestions you folks might have on how you would think it’s easiest to contact me in regards to the subscription I’ll be more then happy to accommodate by doing so. For example I could create a form directly underneath the download link on my downloads page with general or specific fields, whatever you’d like to see please suggest.

But John A. Bilicki’s list has not been updated since October 2005, according to the homepage. Perhaps it could be included as fixed list (loaded only once), but does it make sense a subscription periodically checked if the filters are not updated? Unless future updates are planned, obviously.

I’ve been trying to update them though I’ve been going through one hell of an AGP to PCI-Express upgrade and it’s been one thing after another so by the time I get a couple new filters XP corrupts. Should be back up and running within two weeks tops though.

The only problem with my list at the moment is that some sites are starting to leach their images off of aka-something or another. I’ll have to figure out how to program an exception. I haven’t had any complains though with my list. They will be updated soon.

I’ve updated the filters a little but the main point of my filters is that they reliably block banners and flash ads on heavy traffic websites without effecting content that surfers would want to see. I’ve only had to create a filter about once a month on Firefox based off of the list that until tonight had not been updated since late last year. I also do not block advertising sites unless I find their content loading on a different site.

If anyone has any suggestions of popular sites that I could visit to go hunting for banners please let me know and I’d be more then happy to update my list accordingly. I also have plans to add a submission form for people who would like to report sites displaying ads while using my subscription but the idea is very fresh since subscriptions to filter lists are still fresh itself. Just because something is a little dated does not make it useless. My AMD 3500 is still keeping me happy for example. ;-)

Could you please put a comment as the first line of your filterset – something like “Please send suggestions and problems to ….”? Also, it would be nice if you had at least a minimal web page for the subscription – download link, contact form, telling what ads you are targeting and how often you update. Finally – is it correct to say that your main focus are US sites?

The subscription link is available here…

I’ve been working on a walk-through template but for now there are directions for installing Adblock (old version) and how to setup Adblock Plus with my subscription. I plan on doing more work on this of course though the audio visual walkthrough will take about a week or two to get up and running.

There are links to my contact form, I’ve mentioned on my downloads how often I update (which might be several times a day if people contact me that often).

I live in the US but I don’t have any specific focus. I visit sites in other countries (written in English) so if I encounter an ad there I will block it and add it to my filter list. However if there is a sense of concentration this is a mostly American list right now.

Take a look and let me know what you’d like me to improve upon if anything from this point please.
