Adblock Plus and (a little) more
Adblock Plus 1.1 release candidate available · 2009-07-10 03:19 by Wladimir Palant
Important note: From now on, updates for development builds will be found automatically, it is no longer necessary to install them manually every time. Also, development builds will be created automatically once per day (night) if changes are found in the repository. Changelogs for all builds are also generated automatically and can be found in the directory of the development build (to view the changelog click “Show information” when Firefox offers you an update). This means that the announcements here are no longer necessary, they will only be posted for important builds.
The development build 1.1alpha.0+.2009071001 is the first release candidate for Adblock Plus 1.1. So far the known issues are:
- Subscription list on first run in Thunderbird: entire mail window is closed when clicking “Subscribe” (bug 503299)
- SeaMonkey: Toolbar button looks ugly with the Modern theme (Modern theme doesn’t allow properly adding buttons other than the ones coming with SeaMonkey)
- About dialog: version number is vertically misaligned in Firefox nightlies

Is it safe to use the automated builds? Or do we have to expect a “construction site” with wrong/not working features an missing things?
Reply from Wladimir Palant:
I won’t push any changes to the repository until they are done. So, yes – it shouldn’t be any more problematic than using development builds before. Issues can happen of course, that’s why I publish these development builds in the first place – to learn about them before a release.

Where’s the US-only version?
I liked the 2-3x smaller file. :)
Reply from Wladimir Palant:
Sorry, US-only version is gone for good – already because I cannot offer different updates for this version than for the “full” version. The difference in download time should be only a few seconds anyway, even the “large” version is fairly small.

Hi,
sure, for downloading it is not so much a problem of the big file size.
But for loading these addons always when starting Firefox browser matters.
It matters if you have e.g. 5-10 extensions with 200-300 kb or 5-10 extensions with 100 kb.
It matters at loading time and it matters at runtime, ram usage/utilization, etc.
Especially for older systems with no high end and pcs with only 512 mb of ram or even fewer..

Reply from Wladimir Palant:
It’s locales – you don’t load more than one, no matter what. For Adblock Plus it doesn’t matter whether it is a single-language build or the “full” build, both performance and memory use are not affected in any way. Only difference is that you have to download slightly more and a little more space is used on your disk.

www.ilm.ee <- Under Weather-forecast Icons there is flash based weather map what is shown as white image.
Object URL > http://ilm.ee/sisu/2008_2/avakaart2/kaart.swf
I wonder why is it blocked with all ads by default.
I’m using latest Minefield nightly and ABP 1.1xx
Reply from Wladimir Palant:
It’s being caused by the filter “/www/delivery/*$domain=~video.belga.be” in EasyList – it blocks the ads on this page but has the side effect of blocking the map as well (see https://adblockplus.org/en/getting_started#false-positives for more info).

Prixsel, that would be a question better ask in the forums. Don’t you think. Many more people that help, read there then here. Just click on forum at the top of this page.

@4: Fixed in EasyList.

Hi,
thanks for clarifying that.

Tried to install Adblock Plus and get “Installation script not found”
Reply from Wladimir Palant:
SeaMonkey 1.1 is no longer supported. I recommend you install SeaMonkey 2.0 Beta 1 – despite the beta status it should be way more reliable, especially when it comes to extensions.

@Wladimir: Your update description usually consist of a link your changelog. Unfortunately, there’s no way to open the changelog from the update dialogue of Mozilla Firefox. It would therefore be great if you could add update information directly to the update description as shown in Mozilla Firefox.
Reply from Wladimir Palant:
I’m not sure I understand. If you click “Show information” you will see the changelog. Do you mean that the links to bug reports and forum topics don’t work? That cannot be fixed unfortunately, that Firefox feature only allows a minimal amount of markup – no links.
