The good news keep coming · 2006-10-06 04:15 by Wladimir Palant

I got a message from Mike Shaver telling that AMO is revising and extending its list of recommended add-ons for Firefox 2 release — and Adblock Plus should be one of them.

K-Meleon support: three more issues fixed · 2006-10-01 22:55 by Wladimir Palant

Note: Minimal required browser version is K-Meleon 1.02.

Known issues

  • Subscription suggestions dialog causes each toolbar to be placed on a separate line (only visible in the Russian version of K-Meleon for some reason)
  • K-Meleon sometimes crashes on exit (only visible in the Russian version of K-Meleon for some reason)
  • Toolbar icon uses a whole line for itself by default, needs to be moved/resized (thanks to Quicksilver tears)

First browser with Adblock Plus built-in released · 2006-09-29 01:58 by Wladimir Palant

The very first browser with Adblock Plus built-in was released today — K-MeleonCCF 0.05.6.5, thanks Hao Jiang. And that despite the fact that the development build used was marked EXPERIMENTAL and that it wasn’t tested at all in this variation of K-Meleon (unlike the regular K-Meleon it has tabs, and this release is actually the first version not to crash when Adblock Plus is installed).

K-Meleon support: making progress · 2006-09-27 22:37 by Wladimir Palant

Check out the screenshot to see what it looks like.

Changes

  • Added toolbar and status bar icons
  • Added a dozen new error messages, if the plugin doesn’t load you should see the reason in JavaScript console
  • Starting autoregistration for Adblock Plus component manually (not relying on .autoreg any more)

  • Blockable items doesn’t react to keyboard input when opened until you click it
  • Probably a few dozen small memory leaks
  • Toolbar/status bar icon not yet implemented
  • Context menu and tooltip for the icons not yet implemented
  • Several crashes with K-Meleon CCF
  • Blockable items and Preferences dialogs sometimes show K-Meleon’s default menu
  • Subscription suggestions window doesn’t open on first startup
  • Toolbar icon uses a whole line for itself by default, needs to be moved/resized

Known limitations

  • Status bar icon doesn’t react to middle-clicks
  • Toolbar icon cannot be hiden via Adblock Plus options, only via View / Toolbars menu

Heise-RSS in Thunderbird vernünftig lesen · 2006-09-24 06:03 by Wladimir Palant

Ich bin sicher, dass ich nicht der einzige bin, der sich über den RSS-Feed von Heise geärgert hat. Was soll man damit, wenn da keine Zusammenfassung drin steht? Versuchen, den Inhalt an der Überschrift zu erraten? Selbst das Datum der Meldung gibt es in dem Feed erst seit kurzem.

Thunderbird support almost complete · 2006-09-24 05:34 by Wladimir Palant

Changes

  • Switched to new icons
  • Thunderbird is now supported
  • Option “block remote ads in local pages” now considers mailboxes to be local pages
  • Fixed typos in contents.rdf for the Norwegian and Ukrainian locales

Known issues

  • Thunderbird’s “account central” page can be blocked
  • JavaScript exception when editing filters in Thunderbird
  • SeaMonkey Mail not yet supported
  • Songbird integration is absolutely minimal, only way to get to Adblock Plus Preferences is via File / Extensions / Options
  • Thunderbird: Blockable items list always detached in Thunderbird — Thunderbird doesn’t allow sidebar
  • Thunderbird: Toolbar icon is only created automatically in either main or message window but not both
  • Thunderbird: Default keyboard shortcut Ctrl-Shift-A for Adblock Plus Preferences conflicts with a default keyboard shortcut (Edit / Select / Thread)
  • Status bar icon is always located at the very end of the status bar and probably cannot even be moved with Organize Status Bar

Thunderbird, first impressions · 2006-09-23 04:55 by Wladimir Palant

I have been experimenting with Adblock Plus in Thunderbird (large parts of the user interface work already, I’ll release a development build soon). It looks like I might stop using “Simplified HTML” + “Block loading of remote images”, a setup I have been using for over three years. But maybe now I can finally enjoy reading RSS feeds with images.

Adblock Plus for Thunderbird - coming! · 2006-09-21 23:37 by Wladimir Palant

Note that even though this development build installs in Thunderbird and Songbird there is absolutely no user interface integration. You can only access the preferences via Tools / Extensions / Options (or File / Extensions / Options in Songbird). Integration in Thunderbird will improve, Songbird integration will stay very basic however — your best choice will be to install a subscription there.

Changes

  • Changed install.rdf to allow installation in Thunderbird and Songbird
  • Removed mail-specific protocols from the whitelist to allow blocking content in Thunderbird
  • Fixed checkboxes in welcome dialog on Linux (forum thread)
  • Now blocking content on keyword: URLs as well (bug 15072)
  • Removed URL validation when deciding whether the URL uses to a whitelisted scheme (bug 15072)
  • Made about:blank an exception, isn’t whitelisted by its scheme any more (bug 14793)
