Adblock Plus and (a little) more

The good news keep coming · 2006-10-06 04:15 by Wladimir Palant

I got a message from Mike Shaver telling that AMO is revising and extending its list of recommended add-ons for Firefox 2 release  — and Adblock Plus should be one of them. That’s great news, especially since I thought that the formulation “some of our recommended extensions that make use of popular online services” excluded the possibility of extensions like Adblock Plus ever getting on this list. I guess they are revising this formulation as well. Thanks, Mike!

Well, as you probably already already noticed — Firefox 2 is important. Important enough to release Adblock Plus 0.7.2 before Firefox 2. This version with Thunderbird support, performance improvements and new icons must be ready by then. This means a change of plans. The changes to the subscriptions dialog and object tabs improvements should get in, support for unblocking items on the other hand can’t be done in the short time. Some of the other bullets in my plans will have to move to Adblock Plus 0.8 as well (at least I think that Adblock Plus 0.8 will be the next release). There will be as few changes to the user interface as possible, the translators should have enough time.

Great news and great extension! One feature request I wasn’t sure where to send was to ask if you could find a way to block images and ad content before it was downloaded. From what I could tell, the images and flash are downloaded, but hidden from loading. However, this still uses bandwidth. HULK hates ads wasting bandwidth. Some research shows me this might have been a feature at one point, or a feature of a different plug-in, but I’m fond of the little c0ck-a-roach.

    Reply from Wladimir Palant:

Adblock Plus always blocks downloads entirely, unlike Adblock that might download ads with some settings.

As to the cockroach icons – these have been dropped in the current development builds. Once those are released there should be a style on userstyles.org for those who want them back.

Thanks for getting back to me, Wladimir. I must have been confused. :( Once again, congratulations on a great extension. This tool is more important than any other extension I use—and I currently have over 20 installed.

You say you want to release a new version for firefox 2 but FF2 is already at the 3rd (and supposedly final) Release Candidate.

Will we see any development builds before FF 2.0 is officially released?

    Thanks!

    Reply from Wladimir Palant:

According to plans Firefox 2 is to be released in 6 days. I don’t think I’ll manage to release until then (though I’ll try) so will probably be a few days late. The next development build should hopefully come tomorrow.
