Adblock Plus and (a little) more

Why Adblock Plus on download.com isn't being updated · 2010-01-30 01:19 by Wladimir Palant

  • Dear CNET, so you own download.com? Very easy to remember, nice for you.
  • No, I am not really interested in publishing my software there, addons.mozilla.org suits my needs much better.
  • Oh, somebody already uploaded my software and I only need to keep it updated? Ok, I guess this won’t be too much of a problem.
  • Why did you subscribe me to this newsletter? I didn’t ask for it!
  • Oh my, this upload process is crap… Why am I wasting my time with this? And you want money for the update to show up within reasonable time, if one doesn’t pay you simply delay everything by 10 days. Certainly not my favorite distribution channel.
  • You subscribed me to that newsletter again? How often do I have to unsubscribe?
  • I give up…
  • So now people complain in your forum that your Adblock Plus version is outdated? Ok, I’ll do you a favor and request removal.
  • Crap, the “Request Product Removal” link goes to a generic support form and “Product removal” isn’t even available as a choice! Let’s choose a topic that looks most suitable and send the request anyway…
  • Do you really think that I want this newsletter simply because I logged in again after being away for a year? Ok, I unsubscribed again, how do I remove my account now?

And that’s why I don’t use download.com – Although I know far too many computer novices who think it’s great. I try to educate them but it’s a losing battle…

I also dislike the way the adverts have more prominent “Download Now” buttons than the application in question.

Good job I’ve got Adblock Plus :D

Thanks for all your hard work on this.

    Hi Wladimir,

I head up software publisher development on Download.com and came across this posting. I appreciate your candid feedback and would love to get your thoughts on we make this easier for our software publishers. Feel free to email me directly: peggy.yu@cbs.com.

Simon – this goes for you as well.
