Adblock Plus and (a little) more

Three’s the charm. 3 publishers lose 3 lawsuits on appeal · 2017-08-17 15:09 by Ben Williams

The appellate court in Munich, Germany today issued rulings in favor of Adblock Plus (eyeo) and against three separate appeals cases: RTL Interactive, ProSiebenSat.1 and Süddeutsche Zeitung.

So the German courts once again decided 100 percent in support of consumers’ right to block ads and 100 percent in favor of Adblock Plus.

It really does seem that three is the magic number for Adblock Plus, as all three of these companies have sued-and-lost against Adblock Plus (eyeo) before.

This new appellate court ruling confirms the previous decisions of the Munich district court in all three cases. The three separate plaintiffs had all lost their lawsuits in their first instances in the Munich court. Not satisfied with their losing court decisions the first time, all three companies appealed their three separate cases to a higher German court – and they lost all three cases again.

Even better, the new ruling contradicts an earlier finding of the appellate court in Cologne in the appeal of Axel Springer, which took issue with certain aspects of our whitelisting program. In particular, it does not consider it a breach of competition law for a company to maintain a whitelist (as we offer) and offer related (even paid) services to other companies (as they are not forced to accept them). It’s like when you ask your professor to re-examine your test score and they discover that you actually deserve an even better grade.

The higher court recommended to the plaintiffs that they focus their energies on finding alternative business models. We agree – Maybe they could look at Flattr!

Media companies are so removed from reality, they deluded themselves into thinking they could ban Adblock Plus. Their efforts only increased awareness of Adblock Plus, ha ha.

    Congratulations Mr Ben Williams.

Which is better, Adblock or Ghostery?

    Reply from Ben Williams:

    Hi Thomas,
that’s of course up to you, but if you want to use an ad blocker with a fair approach towards everyone, then the answer is Adblock Plus.

    Reply from Ben Williams:

Well, they actually do different things. Ghostery is not an ad blocker — it blocks tracking scripts, something you can also do with ABP by enabling the “EasyPrivacy” option in the settings.

  6. Ghostery is bad · 2017-08-18 14:41 · #

    @Thomas #c007091

Use Adblock Plus with EasyPrivacy list : features#tracking

Ghostery, Inc. plays a dual role in the online advertising industry.

    Thanks for stepping in!

    Both are overrated and insufficient

“uBlock Origin” is right now the indisputable King of Content/ad blocker. period!

Adblock Plus was saving our tech from Annihilation, before Ublock Origin was even gleam within it’s creators eye.

“King of content/ad blocker”, oh please!!! Can you say, “100 million active Adblock Plus users”? If Ublock Origin reaches that milestone, then you can talk sh*t.

Internet users should select an Adblocker on it’s ability, do not become a victim of someone’s dogma, or agenda. It’s no secret, Hipsters, websites, “trying” to a decrease Adblock Plus’s user base. Dictating like wing nuts towards their users/readers, because of their disapproval towards Acceptable ads. Easily disabled with on click.

My personal choice, Adblock Plus 4 life! :)

I need this. Most all web-sites I go to want to throw ads and stupid flash player garbage in your face. I have a flash player named Adobe. I don’t need another. I won’t use another. This ad-blocker was advised by a friend over two years ago and for the past few months I’ve not been able to block anything. I sure hope this the answer to my problems? Thank you for this.

    Sincerely,
    James

The way I understand it, ABP makes Ghostery redundant and has content-blocking and hiding functionality that Ghostery doesn’t, so although the two extensions don’t work in quite the same way, you’re better off getting ABP with the EasyPrivacy and Enhanced Tracking lists, and with Acceptable Ads disabled, and not also using Ghostery.

uBlock Origin is technically superior to ABP, including some advanced anti-anti-adblock measures and hiding syntax that ABP does not have (although some of that, like XPath in hiding rules, is under consideration), and performing more efficiently than ABP; however, ABP is supported on some platforms (like Internet Explorer, and iOS content-blocking) that uBlock Origin is not, and support for platforms outside the core of Firefox and Chromium derivatives (for example, Edge and Desktop Safari) is limited.

Ben, has the court ruled on Adblock Plus’s appeal of the Cologne court ruling on Axel Springer?

    Reply from Ben Williams:

The next step in that one is a way’s off. This is still the latest: https://adblockplus.org/blog/german-court-again-says-ad-blocking-legal-axel-springer-given-consolation-prize-on-appeal

Indeed, Ublock Origin is a fine adblocker, I detest the constant spamming on Adblock forums. Internet users have made their choice, creating fake stories to force users to use a rival productI is an “Epic fail!

Ublock Origin needs to be promoted on it’s strength, than having 2 digit IQ Trolls posting negative, insulting, fake news.

Let’s continue with the subject matter at hand, Adblock Plus’s court victory. :)
