Adblock Plus and (a little) more
Status update: 2010-11-05 · 2010-11-05 21:12 by Wladimir Palant
Worked 4 days on Adblock Plus this week. The releases on Tuesday/Wednesday were very stressful, so I am slowing down.
Done
- Adblock Plus 1.3/1.3.1, Element Hiding Helper 1.1, Diagnostics 1.1.3 released
- Fixed a few minor issues reported for these releases, nothing critical so far
- Created an extension to generate Adblock Plus screenshots, used it to update screenshots/“translate” them to more languages
- Caught up with forum/email again, somewhat
Next
- Finish server-side implementation of the issue reporter (sending notifications, removing old reports, immediate feedback for known issues)
- Finalize new adblockplus.org start page
- Set up Anwiki for easylist.adblockplus.org
- Performance optimizations for Adblock Plus

Nice work with the screenshots, it looks good..
It seems like I can’t translate the new screenshot, or any other page anymore.
I appreciate your hard work and thanks for updating!
Reply from Wladimir Palant:
Sorry, you should be able to translate again, I fixed the permissions.

(upd) Vladimir, would you please to implement clickable placeholders support for blocked elements in ABP ? It will be very powerfull blocking with “third-party” blocking parameter for out sites and clicking on images and media placeholders to see if it needed !!!
Also white-list will be smaller than usual black-list !!!
Imho it even easier would be done via command lines with “image”, “object” etc. existent parameters!
Thank you in advance!

The reason why the priority of this feature became very low: things like $third-party are mostly useful against scripts. Filter subscription are mostly targeting scripts as well by now, scripts are blocked even before they get a chance to insert an ad into the page. But how would one display a placeholder for a script? A script isn’t a visual element, it doesn’t have a position and a user won’t have any idea what it is.

Placeholders are needed for only images and media, for script I hope there is status-bar button(or just movable button) with a list of all blocked stuffs on the page(or something like that) with possibility to unblock.
I mean that “$third-party” is very useful against flash(media) and banner images too and counters! And possibility of clicking to show it – is just very comfortable stuff if it’s needed to see picture or media sometimes. And that way of blocking is very powerful, I’ve tested it on Opera browser where is a few scripts that do clickable placeholders and blocking site-out scripts with a white-list. And placeholders may look very comfortable view and could be even different for .jpg , .gif ,etc. for example !!! It would be awesome! By the way this suggestion just may be used for well known “flashblock” function, that many users use, but if it’s integrated in ABP – it will be much better! I hope you would like this idea like I do!Reply from Wladimir Palant:
That’s what I meant – these placeholders would only be useful in a very narrow area. Replacing Flashblock is a non-goal, so the priority of this feature is very low (currently significantly lower than the effort required).
