Adblock Plus and (a little) more

PC World chooses Adblock Plus as one of 100 best products of 2007 · 2007-05-23 19:08 by Wladimir Palant

It seems that Adblock Plus was chosen as one of 100 best products of 2007. This is pretty remarkable since the list consists not only from software solutions but has lots of hardware and services as well. From what I can see, Adblock Plus is the only Firefox extension chosen this year (last year StumbleUpon, NoScript and Greasemonkey made it). Also, it seems that I was the only physical person who received the award this year, most others being larger companies like Google or Intel.

Not to correct you or anything, but Noscript and stumbleupon got on the list last year too. I didn’t see them on the list at all this year though. Just letting you know.

Congrats on making the list..I think it’s well deserved. I would say ABP should have been ranked higher, but oh well.

    Reply from Wladimir Palant:

Ah, I thought so. They were listed as “add-on” and not as “extension”, that’s why I didn’t find them. I corrected the text.

    Regards

    Reply from Wladimir Palant:

What do you uninstall – Adblock Plus? Then it shouldn’t be Adblock Plus that blocks whatever is blocked for you. See http://adblockplus.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=925.

Hey, did you get a physical award? If so, can you upload a picture of it?

    Reply from Wladimir Palant:

No, I only got a “promotion kit”. So the “picture” is already there – see http://adblockplus.org/en/, on the right.

I just updated Firefox to 2.0.0.5, and it seems to break Adblock Plus. I no longer have a “Adblock this image” context menu, and the “Adblock” tab no longer appears below Flash content. Moreover, when I add a wildcarded filter URL manually, like

    http://judo.salon.com/RealMedia/ads/*.gif

    for this page:

    http://www.salon.com/opinion/greenwald/?source=rss

    It has no effect.

Hey Wladimir, congrats on the top 100.

I am wondering…would it be possible to incorporate an automated user agent switcher into Adblock plus, for those times when people block or redirect firefox browsers because they dislike people blocking ads?
(namely that person who ranted about adblock on the Moz Plugins site.)

Switching the user agent isn’t a big deal, but it would be nice if it could be included in adblock plus and automated somehow.

@sTech (Response 10): with the IETab extension for firefox, you can have similar product extensions, and render the page under IE. The biggest difference, AdblockPlus is free whereas that adblockpro cost 20 bucks.

    Wladimir,
Just wanna say THANKS a lot for the great product, Adblock Plus. My husband and I have installed it and are very satisfied with the results. It not only shuts out annoying ads, but also speeds up surfing, which is a great thing since we work online. P.S. we don’t mind text adds, just the irrelevant, flashy, ugly, horrible, distracting, despicable ones the web is much better off without.

“We do not mind non-intrusive text adds, just the irrelevant, flashy, ugly, horrible, distracting, despicable ones the web is much better off without.”

We hope advertisers will realize this and make web-surfing a pleasant experience for everyone.

A suggestion for Adblock: since there is a campaign to block Firefox users who use your product, it might be a good idea to develop versions for Internet Explorer and other browsers. Once these are available, we, Adblock fans, will help spread the word.

    Reply from Wladimir Palant:

There is already more than enough ad blocking software for Internet Explorer and other browsers. It is however much more difficult to develop which is why there are no free solutions (as far as I know).
