Adblock Plus and (a little) more
Latest Firefox update massively improves Adblock Plus memory usage · 2015-09-23 16:06 by Ben Williams
Mozilla pushed the newest update of its Firefox browser yesterday. The new Firefox version 41 contains an important fix that improves Adblock Plus memory usage in a huge way, allowing your computer to do more, faster.
This all originated with an issue that Firefox was having in May. Mozilla developer Nicholas Nethercote was the one who spotted it, and he reported it on his blog. The issue involved Firefox creating too many so-called “style sheets” for Adblock Plus users – our cofounder Wladimir also blogged about it then. Nicholas noted back in May that it “isn’t all bad” and that most people, including himself, “will gladly use extra memory in order to block ads.”
True – most modern machines have enough RAM to make small spikes in memory usage unnoticeable. And here’s a little-known fact: all add-ons use a little memory (which is a different thing than bandwidth usage or “speed” – using ABP has been shown to make your speed … faster).
But there are some power users out there who are trying to squeeze every ounce of productivity out of their online experience.
They can now rest easier and browse just that much quicker, because last week a Mozilla developer patched a 14-year-old bug. Now Firefox uses about the same amount of memory whether you’re running ABP or not.
Nice job to the gals and guys at Mozilla! I literally just got the notice for the 41 update, so as I write this last sentence you can be sure it’s as efficiently as possible.

Confirmed. Firefox was a memoryhog, but now: 30 Extensions, 10 Tabs and only 500MB used. Well done.
Now just remove that ugly Australis-Windows 10 UI and we’re par @Mozilla.
Great job from devs @ABP like ever!
