Adblock Plus and (a little) more

Firefox bug disabled all add-ons - including Adblock Plus · 2019-05-04 10:38 by Laura Dornheim

Since late Friday night, an expired certificate caused all add-ons on Firefox to be disabled.
With Adblock Plus being one of the favorite add-ons for users world-wide, this hits us hard. But we have absolute confidence in the open source community behind Firefox to get this fixed as soon as possible!
There is nothing you can or need to do, other than wait for Firefox to update, which will most likely happen automatically.

So in the meantime, stay strong when faced with a pop-up, a screaming flash-ad or an annoying banner while you browse the web.
We will soon be able to block all that for you again!

Update (May 4th, 10pm CEST): At about 4:15 CEST Firefox started to deploy an update that fixed the issue with the expired certificate, so by now all your add-ons should function again.
If you still have issues with Adblock Plus on Firefox, post a comment or reach out to us on Twitter.

Update (May 5th, 6pm CEST): It seems the fix from Firefox is not working for all. Here are three things you can try:
1. For some users, downloading Adblock Plus through our website adblockplus.org works.
*2.*You could check also Mozillas latest blogpost for possible measures that bring your add-ons back.
*3.*Last but not least: Adblock Plus works smoothly and blocks all annoying ads on Chrome, Safari and Opera!

Indeed—good to find this page for confirmation this morning of 04 May 2019…

Found a work around that seems to work in my environment (Firefox/Mac) from this page:

Summary:
From the FF address field, enter about:config
Type the following in the search field at the top: xpinstall.signatures.required
Double click this value to change the ‘value’ to be ‘false’

Looking at the add-ons from within Firefox now shows a ‘proceed with caution’ status, but it (and other add-ons) work so far.

A workaround in Firefox ESR is to go to about:config, ignore the warning an find xpinstall.signatures.required
Set “true” to “false” (just doubleclick on it) and all extensions are back. As soon as Firefox fixed this problem I’ll put it back to “true”. I’ll temporally will not download or install anything with Firefox.

To supplement above work-around involving disabling the xpinstall.signatures.required value:

Be CERTAIN to reverse this after Firefox has deployed its fix

Otherwise, you will be vulnerable to installing malicious plug-ins that are unsigned.

Probably a good idea to simply not install any plug-in with the value set to False.

Thank you very much, Laura! I figured Firefox, et. al. messed something up, but it’s great to know what it was, and, more importantly, that ABP kept us up-to-date. I truly appreciate all of ABP’ time and effort.

For a moment I was in advertisement-hell. When you have had Adblock plus for years (like me), you don’t realize the evolution of ads. They have become more agressive and have grown in number to the extreme. What has happened to the internet and how do people without adblock-extensions even survive??

Thanks for the info on this – it’s a relief to know Firefox will likely have this fixed soon (or so we hope), as we really count on our Adblock Plus! When they do fix it, will we have to manually re-install add-ons such as yours, or will it happen for us automatically (if you know)?

Setting xpinstall.signatures.required to false did not fix it for me. Firefox still shows adblock as disabled and when trying to install from the adblock page Firefox tells me it is corrupt (which I don’t believe). I have version 3.5.2 installed as of April 20th. Firefox version is 66.0.3. Windows 10.

Just found this important info from Mozilla, which answered my above question about automatic re-installation (supposedly it WILL be automatic):

It also advises that “To provide this fix on short notice, we are using the Studies system. This system is enabled by default, and no action is needed unless Studies have been disabled. Firefox users can check if they have Studies enabled by going to:
Firefox Options/Preferences -> Privacy & Security -> Allow Firefox to install and run studies (scroll down to find the setting)”
(I found that studies were not enabled in my Options – just checked the box to allow.)

ALL OF MY FIREFOX ADDONS have been disabled due to this bug. Lol there is no way this doesnt get fixed soon, or anyone that used firefox with additional plugins for functionality will leave the browser immediately. Im glad that this was the first place I checked because I thought it was my computer, but a serious issue is afoot and for once it isn’t my doing.

I have happily been using ABP and other things to be almost totally “ad free” for years. Firefox’s infuriating superfluous screwup exposed me to the horrors of Ad Hell for the first time in ages.

First, Kudos to Laura and ABP for useful, timely information.

Second, I learned I REALLY appreciate ABP.

Third, I am breaking down and contributing $$ to give a Big Thanks to ABP.

Fourth, Please, please give us a way to stop the “Anti-ABP” harassment from web sites that pester us about evading their annoying ads.

Fifth, THANK YOU ABP!!!!!

The signature workaround doesn’t work for me either. The internet as a whole has returned to be the incredibly ad-infested shit it really is. This is yet another major, super embarrassing cockup that will cost FF and the whole open source crowd a lot of street cred. :( I feel sorry for the ABP people and all other extension developers who are having a hard time too due to this crap. :(

my ad blocker just stopped working on my old vista 32bit so upgrade to new firefox
is not on !!! very very annoying !!!!! POOR show from firefox. How DARE they shaft my computer with there STUPID security (ha,ha) precautions

Well, I guess some linux users will have to wait for a full firefox update. The “studies” trick doesn’t work on my linux install, while it does on windows. This won’t help firefox…

Great. ABP disabled on FF 50.1.0 on WinXP and none of the suggestions work.
It comes back as ABP either corrupt or disabled. F*cked either way.

All this guff about “automatic updates”… sure that’s gonna be a lot of help when the fix will only be applied to the latest and greatest FF which is no use to WinXP.

Firefox should have come with ABP by default.
Time to move to Chrome, where something actually does work.

My Firefox didn’t update and I’m not seeing anything from them being updated. I’ve tried to download Adblock Plus again but its still telling me the download is corrupt.

Nope I can’t use the net without you [AdBlock plus] I actually uninstalled FireFox and am using IE.
I will keep looking for a corrected FF but ABP wasn’t working on some sites for a while prior to this. But it works great on IE for me.

I read your replies that Firefox should have rolled out updates….but I checked for updates, and Firefox said that there weren’t any. I still can’t get my AdBlock back up and running. Do we still have to wait? Should I uninstall and reinstall Firefox??? It also disabled my Kaspersky anti-virus protection!!!

None of the setting tweaks did worked for me (Win 8.1/FF 66.0.3), so I have switched browser.

FF needs to get their sh*t together or will loose lots of users

Can anyone in fact confirm that there has been a fix via Firefox? Like other users here, my version (FF 66.0.3 64-bit for Apple) is still preventing AdBlock from either working or updating—even though their AddOns page literally suggests AdBlockPlus as a replacement. This is painfully, embarrassingly badwork on FF’s end.

Firefox 60.6.1 esr on Suse 15 works fine with Adblock. Reinstalling ABP worked.

I’m running firefox 56.02 64 bit. I haven’t upgraded to 57+ since session manager doesn’t exist for it.

In any case, as of now, my addons are still disabled.

Chrome is indeed looking better by the minute…

The only way to fix it (as suggested elsewhere) is to manually install the fix:
right click this link and save it as *.xpi and than run it with FF
https://storage.googleapis.com/moz-fx-normandy-prod-addons/extensions/hotfix-update-xpi-intermediate%40mozilla.com-1.0.2-signed.xpi
and the same with Adblock Plus (if someone has uninstalled this like me)

I’m still not seeing my ABP. It’s still blocked. I even tried installing it again but it failed. Checked for update on firefox but it says it’s up to date. I need a solution.

Adblock Plus just got disabled in Firefox 66.0.3.

I tried uninstalling it and re-installing it from the site here but Firefox says the installer is corrupt or something??? So now I have no adblock at all.

For all those saying they still can’t use ABP despite the supposed update, I had to check the “studies” box as described above, and also had to restart Windows 10 and Firefox before ABP started working again. But it now works, and I’m happy about that for sure.

I checked the studies box, but it keeps unchecking itself when I close the options.
Still can’t reinstall Adblock Plus.

At least I can temporary load the xpi using about:debugging for now…

I also had to click the studies box. There are actually 2 boxes you need to check – see the Firefox instructions here: https://blog.mozilla.org/addons/2019/05/04/update-regarding-add-ons-in-firefox/

It took a few minutes after I checked that box , but after a short while (I think less than 30 minutes) ABP was on again. I’m waiting for Firefox to do an update so I can uncheck the studies box, but in the meantime this seems to work.

I still do not have Adblock Plus or any of my other add-ons back.

I have a dial-up connection because it’s all that I can afford. Since it is an EXTREMELY SLOW connection it is all the more important that I am able to block adds and trackers that slow down my browsing.

I admittedly do not know a tremendous amount about computers in general. But I’m afraid that because I have such an extremely slow dial-up connection it will take way longer for me to get my add-ons back, if I’m able to get them back at all?

It already takes insane amounts of time for me to get my Firefox updates due to the dial-up connection.

Anyone have any advice for me to get my add-ons back? Please keep in mind that I’m far from a computer expert, and I have a dial-up connection.

I’m in the same boat as many….Adblock Plus was disabled. As of tonight, I am apparently not in the batch of the few who got a fix as I’m still not able to download the extension. Get the same error message….‘Download failed. Please check your connection.’

Echoing the above kfj here, and after midnight (so morning of the 5th) for me. Error message is “Download failed. Please check your connection.” Still unable to use add-ons, especially ABP. I’m NOT on dial-up; I’m on a pretty speedy wireless.

I was running fine on version 54 of Firefox, and they broke it with whatever they did. If I upgrade, I lose a lot of plugins I use, so maintain a system with 54 on it specifically for that purpose.

How the hell did they break an old revision? Can I get a copy of adblock plus, or will you run back thru all the down revs you might have (seem to remember doing that, maybe not with ABP though) so I can get it running?

I’m about done with firefox, between the destruction of the addon community with their ill guided upgrade and no back compatability to the developers, and now this, I think of the story about the mule and the two by four.

ABP still doesn’t show after restarting FF and laptop. Should we just sit and hope that it will be fixed soon? How do we know when it’s fixed for everyone? I do all my important works on FF, and all the ads popping up all over the place is detrimental to my OCD :(

Well, I did not receive that fix file from Firefox even though I had that “Allow Firefox to install and run studies” box ticked since the get go. Is that normal for the fix to be sent to some users, but not to others? It has almost been 2 days and no solution for the problem. Honestly considering moving on from Firefox to Chrome or Opera.

Firefox still messed it up and at the weekend i don´t think they bring out a fix.

Well, this isn’t actually about the certificates at all; apparently, Firefx has decided to permanently disable AdBlock!! Aong with the classic themes restorer and even Duck Duck GO!! The add-ons page states these are “legacy” add-ons, and no longer valid, as they are “modernizing” the browser. Well, they can do whatever they want with it; I a DONE.

Obviously Mozilla and FireFox have been careless and disrespectful. What reason was there to update a functioning application.

There is nothing in the world that dictates that I need to use FireFox with Adblocker Plus removed. On to Chrome!

This is not fixed. Adblock doesn’t work, won’t reinstall because it says the download is corrupted (from the adblock site) or “failed” (Mozilla site). Just saying it “should be fixed” doesn’t help. It isn’t.

IT IS STILL NOT WORKING!!! Whatever they claimed to have done, it’s still generating the same error messages, still cannot download it or activate the add-on. Adblock Plus is NOT viable and if so neither is Firefox.

Still not working on Sunday 5 5 19. I think they have succumbed to the advertisers threats. trying to find another browser that will block all extremely annoying ads. Unfortunately they all have issues of one sort or another.

I don’t believe for a second that this was a bug. If it was a bug, I would be able to go to the Adblock Plus home page and reload the software, while the signature requirement is disabled. The fact that it says the file is corrupted, is pure horse hockey. What are the chances of the file being corrupted at the same time as the so called bug is active? In my opinion, slim and none. Also, older versions of Firefox that are no longer supported were also hit, so did they out of the goodness of their hearts try to update the older versions too, even though that feature is disabled? Seems funny to me. And no, it is still not fixed for me on two different platforms.

I still can’t download adblock or any other ad blocking extension. Says they are all corrupt . Really? I’ve been using Firefox for years, but this is a deal breaker. I’ll have to go with Chrome until you guys can fix this.
Also if you answer with directions to check a certain box, please thoroughly explain where to find it. ( I’ve wasted enough time looking for a “studies “ box )

Checked the Studies as advised by Firefox and their “fix” shows in the Completed (not Active). Firefox says the “fix’ only applies to desktops but most of us have laptops. Why is there no fix for laptops?

I will not be using firefox ever again; I am tired of their sanctimonious garbage anyway. So glad your addon works on Chrome. I think it would be worth your time to get some people to help you jack the Mozilla code and fork your own browser so this kind of thing doesn’t happen again.

I’ve done everything suggested both here and on FF’s site. I even finally succumbed to the pop up nag and updated the browser. The weird thing is – something still seems to be blocking ads. I use a couple ad heavy sites and specifically got ABP so I could read these sites without being harassed. I’m still not seeing ads on those sites. Then there is one specific news outlet that started refusing to allow me access unless I “turned off your ad blocker.” I just followed a link to that site and got the same denial telling me to turn off the ad blocker or whitelist them. So, even though the ABP icon is no longer displayed in FF, it does seem to be working. I’m still thinking of doffing FF for good and all though. No one should have to waste hours dissecting their constant glitches for a cure.

Just download this fix with Firefox, accept to install it and all of your add-ons should be turned on again (maybe some have to activated manually), but it´s possible not everyone helps it. So you´ve got to wait.

Surfing on the web I found a workaround to the issue. It’s cumbersome since you have to install ABP EVERY time you restart Firefox, but for the time being is a ‘solution’.

- when trying to download ABP, right click the button and choose ‘Save As’ in order to save the .xpi file

- open the about:debugging#addons page of Firefox

- press the ‘Load Temporary AddOn’ button and choose the .xpi file you just saved

Now ABP works again… until you close the browser. But since you have already downloaded the .xpi, you only have to add it manually to the debugging page again

I have two Macs with the Firefox ABP glitch. One, running MacOS 10.13.6, has corrected itself, all AddOns working again. Firefox prefs had “automatic” updates set.

The other Mac, running MacOS 10.11.6, has all AddOns working again EXCEPT ABP. Firefox prefs had “Auto-download but Manual installation” of updates set. Tried updating, but no worky. Still indicates I have latest version installed.

Both Macs show Firefox v. 66.0.3 running. Was Firefox’s FIX a “stealth” auto-update w/o version number, or was it v. 66.0.3?

It’ll be interesting to see whether or not the devs manage to fix this problem across all versions of Firefox, or if everyone will be forced into updating to the latest version once this is solved. There are legions of us who’ve never updated due to the problems users continually face regarding addons. I would like to update if for no other reason than to be more secure, but like so many others this would mean losing nearly all of my current extensions.

Best guess? The certificate expiring revealed and unforeseen bug in ALL versions of Firefox, one which they’re probably having real trouble fixing from the looks of it. So glad there are other options out there when it comes to browser choice!

Found a fix for me on the Mozilla support site as quoted below. I’ve added clarification for Macs in parenthesis. Involves a simple change in your Firefox Options/Prefs:

“Mozilla has rolled-out a fix for this. The fix will be automatically applied in the background within the next few hours, you don’t need to take active steps.

In order to be able to provide this fix on short notice, they are using the Studies system. You can check if you have studies enabled
1. Go to [=](File) > Options (Preferences) > Privacy & Security > Firefox Data Collection and Use. 2. Make sure Allow Firefox to install and run studies is check marked.
If you had it disabled, you can disable studies again after your add-ons have been re-enabled.

They are working on a general fix that doesn’t need to rely on this and will keep you updated.”

This instantly fixed my problem as described in #96. Hope it helps you too.

Any idea how this broke the plugins for use on 54 and 55 versions of Firefox, and whether there is a fix for that.

your previous suggestion, which was to go to the prior versions page (thanks for that link) shows all the versions corrupt.

When I go with my 54 browser to the current addon for adblock plus, it shows the add to firefox button, but then fails with a message that your plugin is corrupt.

what is going on with this, I have not changed my browser, nor do I wish to, as all the older plugins, besides yours break.a

i’m very close to venting on Firefox and these people very incompetent work going on here.

YOU DO NOT HAVE TO UPDATE FIREFOX FOR THE ADD-ONS TO WORK AGAIN.
THE TIP IN POST 37, REPEATED IN POST 90, WORKS!
You do not even need to install the fix manually from the downloaded xpi file.
Simply put the address of the fix below in the Firefox address bar.

Dear FF Users,

Here’s a fix for this annoying problem that’s working for me (in Firefox 65.0 64Bit)

You go to adblock plus addon website as normal:
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-GB/firefox/addon/adblock-plus/

RIght click over the big blue button > Add
Save this file to your desktop: adblock_plus-3.5.2-an+fx.xpi
Open a new tab in Firefox : enter > about:debugging
Click the ‘Load Temporary Add-on’ button (on the firefox debugging page)
Navigate (on your PC hard drive) to the .xpi file you just downloaded
Open it and you will see ABP icon appear in the Firefox Toolbar (it installs fast)

I enabled the nosy thing they said would fix it. It didn’t. I don’t know if they were successful in downloading the crap I didn’t want, since I have very very very little bandwidth. That means I’m having trouble getting my email in Firefox because all those ads want to load. And I can’t easily download AdBlock Plus again — which, by the way, at some point we were told NOT to do, just wait, they’ll fix it.

And NOW — Firefox would not even let me view this page, which I could access via Firefox yesterday! I had to go to Chrome to try to catch up on what’s happening! When I tried to access https://adblockplus.org/blog/firefox-bug-disabled-all-add-ons-including-adblock-plus, Firefox said:

You keep saying “back to normal by now” but it is not. I saw Ad blocker for a minute, then it was gone. Firefox even suggested I refresh it, which I did. It changed my settings which annoyed the hell out of me, but still no ad blocker. I think this is intentional by Firefox, to get people to look at ads for several days while claiming its some bug. Money makes the wordl go round, and I know many companies are ticked off by ad blocking add ons. Coincidence? Hardly.

Thank you for posting that Reddit link, RR! Updating the certificate with the one taken from Mozilla’s own XPI fix worked for me, or at least until it expires again in 2025, lol!

I’ll never upgrade to Firefox Quantium because it gives Mozilla total control over your browser. Add ons can now be disabled by remote, or out of date cert. Sigh!

Cliqz, Mr Robot debarcle, this flawed add on signing was leading up to this cluster “F”. Mozilla continues to ignore their users base concerns. (HaHa).

Thank God! I stayed with the forked firefox versions, blocked mozilla’s rancid ip addresses.

Around 7:00 Eastern last night, I got a Firefox “Quantum” update to version 67.0b17. Now, Adblock Plus (and Ghostery) are listed, once again, in my add-ons list, but neither are functional. Also, there is no icon for either in the navigation bar. I can not visit my preferred news site without Adblock Plus, so I must shift to Opera. I will give Mozilla until tomorrow morning to get their act together.

Hotfix by Mozilla can’t reasonably help XP users, since XP is no longer supported. Adblock still disabled on my computer under XP and running Firefox ESR 52.9.0 :( :( :(
Found no working workaround or is there ??

windows xp users, waterfox, firefox esr 52.9.0, users (old firefox versions) type in the url bar, “about:config” (without “).

type in the search bar “xpinstall.signatures.requred” (without “).
clicking on it will change it to false, restart firefox.

Your add ons will be working. Enjoy.

Thank you for all this. I just discovered it after wondering why I was suddenly seeing ads for malware (DOCtoPDF.io, Manualslibrary.org, and pdfmaker.live). I’m an XP user and couldn’t download any ad blocker from Mozilla today, kept getting a message about download failed or something. For the time being, I’ve switched to Chrome (unsupported). But I may give the above ideas a try if it goes on for long as Chase online banking won’t allow access by old versions of Chrome.

P.S. I just checked out mick’s fix in #131 above. It won’t work as stated because he misspelled “required”. You must enter “xpinstall.signatures.required” (without “) or the search will fail. Otherwise seems OK but, as I stated above, I haven’t actually done so for now.

Thanks firefox, i moved back to google chrome, it loads sites faster anywhay. I use adblockplus since years. And suddenly websites became miserable, its horrible.

“Firefox.settings.services.mozilla.com” is serial add on killer. Thanks to Wireshark, if this url connects to your browser, your add ons become dead as a door nob.

Another one for the hostfile (127.0.0.1 Firefox.settings.services.mozilla.com).

Mine is still not working. I have even tried removing it and reinstalling but no luck. When clicking the “add to Firefox” button I get an error “download failed. check your connection”. My connection is working fine as I can get to the download page but cannot install the addon. Same issue with other addons too.

Adblock seems to be working. It blocks ads. But I keep getting an update installation complete message, and my whitelist gets erased. This happens two or three times day.

Still getting the same crap from Firefox when trying to REinstall Adblock Plus. File is corrupted, connection reset, blah blah blah. I cannot handle dealing with YouTube or anything without Adblock Plus. This misery makes me realize how much I took it for granted! Firefox screwed the pooch on this one. Switching to Chrome at least until they sort things out.

FF notice to disable ABP and restart FF at 9:30 p.m. of 10th.

I run several blockers, and security app’s.
Few problems. Luck, or applications, either way, fewer headaches .
I use FF and MSIE most. May as well try others.
Meanwhile Malwarebytes has been intercepting items.
Invasion attempts stop when I close FF.

Download the portableapps Firefox version, the program runs a seperate profile. Allowing the user to run two different Firefox installation on the same machine.
Bad news! Users need to install their add ons again, a small price to pay, and you can install it on a usb drive.

Updating to Firefox Quantium has left many up “Sh*t creak, without any add ons”.
Your browsers needs to checkin every 24 hours to keep your add ons alive. its time to search for a new browser!

The Mozilla execs come from an advertising background, your add ons cease to function! work it out!!

Ps. Waterfox68(quantium without the bullsh*t), Waterfox56, Palemoon, Balsilisk, Brave browsers. Many more to choose from.

It’s the 19th of May now, Firefox STILL hasn’t fixed their problem with AdBlock Plus. I had temporarily switched to Chrome so I could still use it… looks more and more like that switch might end up being permanent.

everything is working fine but one thing I am pissed of that whenever I am opening cyberflix tv firestick in firefox it is showing too many ads and I am really frustrated

Did you know that you can report ads that aren’t getting blocked through your Adblock Plus extension?
Just click on the logo and it will show you “Report Issue” as an option. This helps our filter list authors to improve the block lists!

wow!!! this is NOT fixed yet lol
Im running an old firefox for a reason, 1 addons that no one makes or updates only works on this old version of firefox and I use this app 5-10 times daily, so it is very important and then firefox “#¤“k up somehow even when I turned off updates they somehow infected my firefox with this BS
xpinstall.signatures.required does nothing…

I have loaded ALL my old addons by using about:debugging
which were located here:
C:\Users\name\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\firefoxprofilename.default\extensions
then you have to load them one by one

I still have to do this method EVERY TIME I RESTART FIREFOX because mozilla have not reinfected my firefox with the fix yet, such a shame firefox is free so i cant sue mozilla
