Adblock Plus and (a little) more
Spare time projects and the "donate now" syndrome · 2006-11-07 04:46 by Wladimir Palant
I guess many of you have seen this development of a project already, maybe even more than once. Some developer has an idea he works on in his spare time. He shares his work with others without asking anything in return and the feedback allows him to improve it to a point where this project gains some popularity. Great features are being added, there are lots of plans for the future — until suddenly the project stalls. That’s usually the point where the developer explains that he needs money that would allow him to spend more time on the project.

Upgraded to Textpattern 4.0.4 · 2006-11-05 23:05 by Wladimir Palant
Textpattern 4.0.4 has been released and now I upgraded this site. RSS encoding issues have been fixed so that I could drop one of my patches — good. Textpattern now has what looks like decent support for the Last-Modified header, yet it shows the date when anything has been changed anywhere on the server — could be better. Some forms will probably need to be changed, I already had to tweak the comments display. But what I am mostly worried about are the changes to the Textile markup module which is the most fragile part of the whole application. Right now the HTML code of the pages is cached but once I start editing them I’ll probably have to fight invalid markup again. Please watch out for anything on this site that isn’t working/showing up as it should and drop me a mail if you notice something.

Moving Adblock Plus focus from filters to subscriptions · 2006-10-28 09:00 by Wladimir Palant
Brian Yi (you probably know him as “Stupid Head” in the forums) wrote down some nice ideas about the reasons for popularity of Adblock (Plus) and how the development should continue. He points out that most people can’t create their own filters or simply don’t want to spend their time on this. That’s why subscriptions are so important for wide-spread adoption, they allow people to install Adblock Plus once and let it run all by itself.

Now that news video is funny! · 2006-10-28 08:16 by Wladimir Palant

We are back in Top10 - and Adblock is out! · 2006-10-25 23:36 by Wladimir Palant
It finally happened — for the first time Adblock Plus has more downloads than Adblock. Only a few moments ago Adblock Plus moved up to rank 10th on AMO and pushed Adblock onto the 11th place. I hope that this time Adblock Plus will get a permanent place in the Top10 (actually, I count on getting into Top5 within the next few days). Last time it was prevented by an problem with the caching server at AMO.

Ethics of blocking ads - Part 2 · 2006-10-25 10:23 by Wladimir Palant
This article continues the discussion on ethical implications of ad blocking software. Since the first part was probably somewhat too abstract we should take an example this time — Heise.de.

"Русские" и Германия · 2006-10-22 09:12 by Wladimir Palant
Подумал недавно над тем, как наши бывшие соотечественники, родившиеся на территории бывшего Союза и эмигрировавшие в Германию уже в сознательном возрасте, эту самую Германию воспринимают. Получилось, что тут в основном существует три категории.

The good news keep coming · 2006-10-06 04:15 by Wladimir Palant
I got a message from Mike Shaver telling that AMO is revising and extending its list of recommended add-ons for Firefox 2 release — and Adblock Plus should be one of them.

It is traveling time again · 2006-10-03 02:15 by Wladimir Palant
I will be traveling a lot, starting this Saturday. I am taking the remaining week of my vacation visiting Cologne and Hamburg, then I’ll be attending to ACM Multimedia in Santa Barbara, CA and NetGames in Singapore. I won’t be back in Oslo until November so don’t expect me to do much Adblock Plus development until then. I’ll try to answer mails from time to time.

First browser with Adblock Plus built-in released · 2006-09-29 01:58 by Wladimir Palant
The very first browser with Adblock Plus built-in was released today — K-MeleonCCF 0.05.6.5, thanks Hao Jiang. And that despite the fact that the development build used was marked EXPERIMENTAL and that it wasn’t tested at all in this variation of K-Meleon (unlike the regular K-Meleon it has tabs, and this release is actually the first version not to crash when Adblock Plus is installed).
