This release includes various user interface improvements around managing custom filters, such as the ability to disable individual filters, as well as further performance and stability improvements. It also removes support for the $collapse and $object-subrequest filter options as well as for filter lists that are served over unencrypted HTTP.

User interface changes

  • Settings page
    • Replaced text area with table for managing custom filters (ui#15, ui#174).
    • Removed unnecessary remove option from filter list menu (ui#238).
    • Sort whitelisted websites alphabetically (ui#240).
    • Fixed: Copyright year in “About Adblock Plus” dialog refers to wrong year (ui#195).
    • Fixed: Website menu item was missing for newly added filter lists (ui#237).
    • Fixed: Link to Adblock Plus page on Weibo not shown for Chinese users (ui#412).
  • Developer tools panel
  • Issue reporter
    • Clarified inclusion of screenshot in issue reports for visually impaired users (ui#83).
    • Fixed: Button disabled for closing page after sending the issue report (ui#245).
  • First-run page: Made links more distinct from regular text (ui#250).
  • Updated extension description (ui#258).

Filter changes

  • Snippet changes
    • Allow wrapping of function properties in abort-on-property-* snippets (issue 7419).
    • Added hide-if-contains-visible-text snippet (issue 7450).
    • Fixed: Filter is being ignored on subsequent filter that uses abort-current-inline-script snippet (issue 7373).
    • Fixed: strip-fetch-query-parameter snippet did not work in older browsers (issue 7407).
  • Removed support for $collapse filter option (core#1).
  • Removed support for $object-subrequest filter option (core#6).
  • Added blank-mp4 resource for internal redirects (issue 7440).
  • Fixed: :-abp-properties() does not work when tag name is specified (issue 7400).
  • Fixed: :-abp-properties() does not work when selector in document ends in a combinator (issue 7428).

Other changes

  • Reject downloads over unencrypted HTTP (core#5).

Firefox-only changes

  • Fixed: Position of rectangles drawn on screenshot in issue reporter was offset (ui#251).

The IT company Confiant has reported in their current Q1 2019 Demand Quality Report that almost every hundredth ad impression that users see is infected with malvertising, and that the risk of infection is higher on the weekend and especially on holidays. The basis for these numbers is the result of an analysis of over 100 billion ad impressions during the time period between Q4/2018 and Q1/2019.

Starting with Adblock Plus 3.6 for Chrome, Firefox and Opera (and development builds as of 3.5.2.2320), the extension will no longer download filter lists over unencrypted HTTP (core#5). Any existing subscriptions with http:// URLs will stop syncing. If you are a filter list maintainer affected by this change, you can migrate any of your current subscribers over in a few simple steps.

Starting with Adblock Plus 3.6 (and development builds as of 3.5.2.2320), filters using the $collapse or $object-subrequest filter options will become invalid and have no effect. We advise filter list authors to update their filter lists, removing any $collapse filter option and replacing any $object-subrequest filter option with the $object filter option.

Since late Friday night, an expired certificate caused all add-ons on Firefox to be disabled.
With Adblock Plus being one of the favorite add-ons for users world-wide, this hits us hard. But we have absolute confidence in the open source community behind Firefox to get this fixed as soon as possible!

  • Worked around an issue due to missing browser.storage.onChanged events in Firefox 66 (Firefox bug #1541449) causing the options page to not respond to some preference changes (issue 7430).
