Adblock Plus and (a little) more

Adblock Plus 1.7.3 for Chrome and Opera released · 2014-01-29 17:38 by Wladimir Palant

Install Adblock Plus 1.7.3 for Chrome
Install Adblock Plus 1.7.3 for Opera (Opera 17 or higher required)

This release fixes pop-up blocking that was broken in the previous release. It also addresses a long standing issue, the size of the “Block element” dialog wasn’t always set correctly.

Has been fixed, released as 1.7.4 (couldn’t keep the version number, Web Store doesn’t allow it). Unfortunately, some “validation” performed by the Web Store currently requires us to manually change the builds before we upload them there. As a result, the build we test and the one we upload aren’t quite the same.

In case you are interested in details: Web Store requires the extension name to be present in every single locale, even though Chrome itself manages to fall back to English just fine. Our build tools currently cannot add this string to the locales where it is missing so we have to do it manually.

And since the work was manual, manual error was involved. The locales bn, fil, hi, ms, ta, te each had an extra comma where it didn’t belong.

“name”: { “message”: “Adblock Plus”, <= comma not valid },

This can be tested by loading in as a unpacked extension prior to uploading the webstore.

Thanks for making a quick fix! :)

Additional testing is what my colleague Thomas Greiner suggested as well. IMHO the release process is already complicated and time consuming enough however, our time would be spent better removing the manual work here. The build tools should simply fill in that string if necessary, it will make sure that we test the same build as the one uploaded to Web Store (minus signature, cannot have the same one). This work item has been on the agenda for a while, maybe somebody will pick it up now…

Wladimir, could be it’s some regression or bug:

ads on youtube ==> first I see ads on google store (embedded YT), then when you click watch on youtube there are preroll ads and normal ads

This update doesn’t fix the YouTube ads that are nowadays allowed on Google Chrome. Is this done on purpose?

    Reply from Wladimir Palant:

No. The issue is most likely this Chrome bug: https://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=332481. It appeared in Chrome 32 and affects mostly Linux users – not much we can do about it.

Hello again, whatever was broken for old versions of Chrome in your 1.7 update is now broken again.

All google ads which were previously blocked are now showing again even though I have ‘Allow some non-intrusive advertising’ unchecked. I use a laptop now when I load google ads fill my entire screen until I page down, I block them but they return upon refresh.

I can select elements to block on various websites using the drop down block elements tool and they and their placeholders are hidden, but when the page is refreshed either the ads are back or the ad is hidden but the placeholders aren’t.

Also elements I had previously blocked with domain##.class rules don’t work anymore.

I’m using chrome version 24.0.1312.52 m is there any chance this could be fixed or a rollback/legacy version made available?

    Thanking you.
