Way to go thanks for the release

It even works well on the Kindle Fire HD.

Any chance you could post a qr code?

    Reply from Felix H. Dahlke:

There is one, didn’t you see it? It’s here:

    https://adblockplus.org/en/android-install

That’s where you get when clicking on “Install for Android” now.

  4. bert · 2013-03-20 14:49 · #

    Won’t download.

    Reply from Felix H. Dahlke:

Mind trying again? Think we solved this.

  5. Jesse · 2013-03-20 14:57 · #

It wont let me download. It says download unsuccesfull in notifications bar.

    Reply from Felix H. Dahlke:

Can you try this link then?

    https://server_10.adblockplus.org/downloads/adblockplusandroid-1.1.apk

The download button is redirecting there now, but maybe some caching gets in the way of that.

  6. Jesse · 2013-03-20 15:15 · #

Copy pasted the link to the mobile browser but still won’t download. I’m running 4.1.2 jb on my note 2 lte if that helps. I’ll try to install it again later.

    Reply from Felix H. Dahlke:

That’s curious, everything seems to be fine on our end. Does the link work in a different browser? (mobile or desktop)

  7. Nexus · 2013-03-20 15:22 · #

Nexus 4 (4.2.2), Chrome and Dolphin Browser failed to download.

  8. Jaz · 2013-03-20 15:22 · #

Keep getting download unsuccessful. Any tips?

  9. Patrick · 2013-03-20 15:28 · #

I am having the same problem, just to let you know.

  10. Jesse · 2013-03-20 15:30 · #

I downloaded the file to my desktop and transferred it to my phone just to install it. Works fine and great job btw. I just hope you can fix the mobile download issue just so others can enjoy it too. Thank for the app.

    Reply from Felix H. Dahlke:

Seems to be an issue with downloads from some Android devices then. I’ve enabled downloading without HTTPS, would you mind trying that?

Link works fine with Firefox but not with regular browser! :-)

  12. Jesse · 2013-03-20 15:57 · #

Link is not working on the mobile chrome.

  13. Mike P · 2013-03-20 16:01 · #

Download didn’t work from Android but worked fine from Chrome on laptop.

How does ABP work compared to ADFree? I don’t mean performance wise, I’m speaking specifically about how each app differs in achieving blocked ads.

ADFree modifies the host file and can be set to auto update on boot. I’m curious about how ABP works and why the constant notification is required.

    Reply from Felix H. Dahlke:

The essential difference is that it acts as a proxy.

This has a few advantages over modifying the hosts file:

    - Works on non-rooted devices – We can inject CSS to hide elements (just like the ABP browser extensions) – We can support more filter options, and thus handle more sophisticated filters

The downside is that the app needs to be running all the time, but there’s no additional network traffic (quite the contrary, since we’re blocking stuff).

  14. Brett · 2013-03-20 16:03 · #

Same here. Can’t download after trying all options, including the non-https link. Note 2 w/ 4.1.1 on Verizon.

  15. lordgrover · 2013-03-20 16:06 · #

Won’t download to my Nexus 4 but downloads okay to google drive on my PC which then installs fine on mobile.
All good here – keep up the good work. :)

  16. Brett · 2013-03-20 16:18 · #

Did the Google Drive / Dropbox method and it installed correctly. Great work and thanks ABP team!

  17. Henrik · 2013-03-20 16:21 · #

Download failed with Chrome for Android but worked fine with latest Opera beta browser. Note 2 running 4.1.2 in Sweden.

  18. Felix H. Dahlke · 2013-03-20 16:22 · #

Pretty stumped about the download issue, don’t see why it wouldn’t work. Works on desktop, works on Firefox for Android, works on Opera for Android.

  19. phatmanXXL · 2013-03-20 16:37 · #

Thank you for continuing to support the ad free experience

  20. Pekka · 2013-03-20 16:41 · #

Download link did not work for me either, but install via Google drive did the trick.

Unfortunately Chrome still shows blank pages (tested 2 local newspaper web sites, both blank), which is a total show stopper at least to me.
Perhaps Google did something new in the latest Chrome that broke your supposed fix (I have Chrome 25.0.1364.169 on Android 4.2.2.)?

  21. Felix H. Dahlke · 2013-03-20 17:54 · #

Okay, figured it out. Turns out Android’s download manager just throws an exception if a host name contains an underscore (which seems to be perfectly legal). Thanks for reporting everyone!

  22. Felix H. Dahlke · 2013-03-20 18:10 · #

For the record: Host names containing underscores are indeed not valid according to RFC 1123. But I still think Android is being a bit anal here.

  23. Jesse · 2013-03-20 19:01 · #

Yep. Its downloading right now. I’m happy you guys are able to fix it. Congrats on a great product!

  24. vwhizbang · 2013-03-20 20:11 · #

Did this fix the issue with AdBlock plus blocking the use of S Voice?

    Reply from Felix H. Dahlke:

No, not yet. We’re on it.

    Hi,
I have downloaded the apk, but I’m unable to install.
If I click the ‘install’ button, nothing happens (it doesn’t respond)
The ‘cancel’ button on the other hand does work when I click it.
I’m on JB 4.1.2 with a Galxy Note

  26. andrewsland · 2013-03-20 22:10 · #

installed without problems through Firefox on my nexus 4. the problem now is that it doesn’t shows me the proxy-port number. it just says ‘%d’

  27. Jason · 2013-03-21 05:48 · #

Thanks for releasing this! I honestly never got around to installing ADP on my phone until I saw all the news of the app being removed from the market. That’s just ridiculous. I went out of my way to install it now. :) Keep up the good work. It works perfectly.

    Reply from Felix H. Dahlke:

Good to hear :) Both our Android and Chrome download numbers have skyrocketed since Google removed ABP, so I guess that backfired a bit :)

  28. Winston Smith · 2013-03-21 09:27 · #

    Screw you, Google!

    Reply from Felix H. Dahlke:

They actually did, we’re seeing a bit of a Streisand effect here :)

On my Galaxy Nexus I was prompted to change my wifi settings and after doing so the app works but my Verizon network extender no longer works. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Reply from Felix H. Dahlke:

Is the Verizon network extender an app? Can’t seem to figure out. Would you mind reporting a bug in the forum?

    Hi !

Thank you very much for the update !
Hope this will help those of us who don’t want to be annoyed wtih ads !

Sorry to ask this but why can’t we add others subscriptions ? Not implemented yet ? Not planned ? Not useful ?

Thanks a lot again and keep up the good work !

    Reply from Felix H. Dahlke:

We’re planning to bring better subscription management (similar to the browser extensions) to ABP for Android once we’ve solved all the teething problems.

  31. dan · 2013-03-21 15:38 · #

is there any way to block ads in apps ?
    thanks
    dan

    Reply from Felix H. Dahlke:

ABP should do that. If it doesn’t, it’s a bug. Would you mind reporting it on the forum?

I installed this for the first time. Many chrome pages won’t display but they display in Dolphin. Angry birds for some reason showed about 10x the number of ads it normally would without ABP. My phone and tablet speed ground to a halt. Uninstalled it and these problems went away.

Phone is a motorola triumph running stock froyo, tablet is a nook tablet running cm10, neither has any problems running a variety of other apps including groove ip and avast antivirus.

    Reply from Andrey Novikov:

I am not a game fun but I have installed Angry Birds and played for about 20 minutes. No single ad appeared. May be you have played some other Angry Birds release?

  33. Tom · 2013-03-21 16:29 · #

I should point out that I noticed that every angry birds game updated in the last day or two. When playing regular angry birds without ABP, I get an ad page every once in a while or a small ad window in the upper right. With ABP installed, I get a full page ad every other bird or so, and lots of pop up windows.

I think they made their app ABP aware and pepper you with extras if they see it. This is shaping up to be a useless war, with both sides spending lots of time and money trying to defeat the other.

I guess I’ll move back to the commonplace idea that if the ad or has too many ads to the point where I need an ad blocker to use it, I’ll just remove it and use a different app or page.

  34. Steve · 2013-03-21 21:53 · #

Does this just work for browsers, or does it also block adds inside apps as well?

  35. Adam · 2013-03-22 00:04 · #

It works just fine on my Droid Bionic using Google chrome and the YouTube app. Honestly, I had never head of this app until I just read an article about it one the technology news feed of Google. So they advertised they deleted the app and I was curious enough to check it out. Now I decided I like it. Good job Google. :)

Works like magic without messing with proxy settings. MK809 TV Stick & HTC OneV. Thanks!!!

Do I have to root my phone to use this? I’ve always been a big fan of the Firefox/Chrome versions, but am hesitant to install something not-from-market. I haven’t rooted either.

    Thanks.

    Reply from Felix H. Dahlke:

No, no need to root your phone. All you have to do is enable installation of software from unknown sources, as described here: http://adblockplus.org/en/android-install

  39. Melissa · 2013-03-25 02:20 · #

Thank you so much! Works great with my kindle fire hd. :-)

Failed on https worked on HTTPTHANKS FOR THE HINT

    Reply from Felix H. Dahlke:

Yes, we cannot really do anything with HTTPS, which is a pity :(

We can forward the traffic just fine, but it’s not like we can see what is actually being transferred.

When I go to add the extension of adblock plus for chrome, i get a message stating that it gives you access to my data on all websites and access to my tabs and browsing activity. What does this mean? What information do you gather if any? What do you do with this information if you gather it?

  42. Paulcardo · 2013-03-28 17:51 · #

I don’t know about you guys but i’m willing to share a couple of bucks to adblock. Keep the good work.

after installing chrome no longer displays webpages, Firefox works fine though

  44. lordgrover · 2013-03-30 14:11 · #

Mostly works well; one or two exceptions that I can add manually so mostly okay.
Dropbox won’t play ball though. Any suggestions or just not possible?

  45. giridhar · 2013-04-01 17:00 · #

I installed but after sometime the internet is fully cutoff, even though the device is rooted.

Do I need to configure anything, I was expecting the configuration to be automatic on a rooted device.

Reply on comment#10. Thanks! The link http://server_10.adblockplus.org/downloads/adblockplusandroid-1.1.apk downloaded and worked just fine on my Android HTC EVO 3D. I just copied the link and pasted it in the address bar. No problems. Great Job!

After enabling the proxy settings as directed Chrome only displays blank pages. Anyone else notice this? Running on a nexus 7 with 4.2.2 installed.

  49. jkayca · 2013-04-14 15:16 · #

Just another quick comment. If I switch the subscriber list to easy list instead of fanboy Chrome no longer displays blank pages.

  50. Spunky · 2013-04-18 18:13 · #

As another comment mentioned, I am having the same problem of an unresponsive “Install” button. However, the cancel button works. This is on a nexus 4.

  51. Sean · 2013-04-18 20:38 · #

The install button doesn’t work on my nexus 10. Cancel works fine

  52. Joe · 2013-04-19 15:30 · #

Add me to the group that cannot click the Install button, but the Cancel button works fine.

    4.0.3 on Verizon
