Adblock Plus and (a little) more

The future of Element Hiding Helper · 2012-01-19 12:08 by Wladimir Palant

The Adblock Plus roadmap currently has a bullet point “Integrate Element Hiding Helper into Adblock Plus”. After adding Page Inspector support to Element Hiding Helper today I think that I’m confident about what exactly will be integrated there. The Firefox team has done a very good job on the Page Inspector feature coming up in Firefox 10, to the point where the Aardvark-based element selection in Element Hiding Helper seems dated and unhelpful. So here is the plan:

  • Page Inspector integration will move from Element Hiding Helper into Adblock Plus itself, same will happen to the rule composer. So comfortable creation of element hiding rules will be possible without any additional extensions, at least for Firefox users. Only drawback: for some reason, it doesn’t seem possible to activate Page Inspector via a keyboard shortcut.
  • Element Hiding Helper will stay around merely as an alternative selection tool — for people who don’t want to relearn things and to support Thunderbird and SeaMonkey that don’t have the Page Inspector (yet?). It will be in maintenance mode however, spending more time on it than required to keep things working just doesn’t seem justified.

    Err.. Ctrl-Shift-I ?

    Reply from Wladimir Palant:

You are right. I have the DOM Inspector extension installed which claims this shortcut for itself – that’s the reason. So the problem is only there in my installation.

Drawback: CTRL+SHIFT+S is way more comfortable than CTRL+SHIFT+I as it doesn’t require to almost break my hand or a second hand for pressing “I”.

Wladimir, would you mind offering an option to map CTRL+SHIFT+S to act as an alternative shortcut for CTRL+SHIFT+I?

    Reply from Wladimir Palant:

Sorry, changing built-in functionality is definitely something I don’t do.

I’m sorry for explaining it wrong.

My suggestion wasn’t a change in Firefox’ behavior or code.
Instead, I was suggesting that Element Hiding Helper offers an option to kinda act as a “pass-through” for the keystroke.

So, if the suggested option was set, pressing CTRL+SHIFT+S would open up the same panel as CTRL+SHIFT+I does.

IMHO it’s a simple convenience-enhancement and no change to built-in Firefox behavior or its code.

CTRL+SHIFT+S is used by Noscript, just fyi.

    Reply from Wladimir Palant:

For any shortcut key there is some popular extension using it. It’s the logical consequence of the available shortcut keys being far too few.

How much money are you making on the side from this recent decision to allow ads? Adblock plus was one of the few addons I recommended to everyone. I can’t recommend it any more.
