Adblock Plus and (a little) more

Status update: 2010-12-03 · 2010-12-08 00:44 by Wladimir Palant

Done

  • Changed plans for Adblock Plus 1.3.5 — a release in December is unrealistic
  • Investigated an issue breaking Java applets when Adblock Plus is installed, probably the same one that is being reported for Pogo.com. Filed bug 616106.
  • Got rid of “invalid XBL binding” warning in Firefox 4
  • Made sure leak testing tools don’t get confused by Adblock Plus (reporting a non-existent leak)
  • Spent some time investigating the memory leak I am observing in my Firefox — couldn’t find anything with the tools I tried, still unsure whether this leak is related to Adblock Plus
  • Tried improving 16×16 Adblock Plus icon (will become the most used icon in Firefox 4), with very little success
  • Started looking into JSHydra for automated code rewriting

Next

  • Release Adblock Plus 1.3.2 to address various minor issues
  • Finalize new adblockplus.org start page
  • Finish Firefox Sync support
  • Issue reporter: Add warning if the user has too many subscriptions
  • Performance: Cache element hiding stylesheet on disk

    Re: the icon

Whatever did happen with that “icon makeover contest” anyway? It just seemed to drop off the face of the earth once the winners were announced.

    Reply from Wladimir Palant:

It seems that the intern who was supposed to work on these icons didn’t manage to finish Adblock Plus icons before leaving (she was only there for the summer). A few days ago I was promised that a regular Mozilla designer would look into this – but given his tight schedule this might still take a while. Unfortunately, my own graphical skills only give me usable results starting with 24×24 icon size, 16×16 is much too small.

Is the Wikimedia Commons SVG version of the Adblock Plus logo any use as an icon (https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/wiki/File:Adblockplus_icon.svg)?

    Reply from Wladimir Palant:

No, it is not – their icon is slightly irregular which looks very bad when the icon is scaled down. I have created my own version where this has been corrected but I still have to find an application where it looks properly when scaled down to 16×16.

Wladimir, I suggest using only two letters in the icon, AB or AP. Three letters are hard to read. The color and shape are enough to identify the icon.
