Adblock Plus and (a little) more

Status Update: 2010-09-03 · 2010-09-04 02:56 by Wladimir Palant

Done

Yes, pretty much nothing else this week. That’s nine new Anwiki bugs filed, a few dozen webpages edited to remove differences between languages (had to write my own comparison script since “content desynchronization” message from Anwiki wasn’t much help), two new content classes and a bunch more code changes to make sure everything works as expected.

Next

  • Switch Anwiki “live”, also add caching and export to www repository
  • Change handling of externally maintained subscriptions
  • Update public interface documentation for Adblock Plus 1.3, the new way to get to Adblock Plus seems stable
  • Start looking into automatically generated reports for subscription maintainers

The latest 4.0b6 Minefield nightly does not load any URL when AdBlockPlus is installed. Error Console shows messages from omni.jar. The b5 build had the same issue couple day ago.

Well, which Adblock Plus version are you running? Everything works fine for me.

Ah, it was 1.2.2. I tried the latest 1.3a and the browser worked. Thanks for the great piece of free and open software.

    Reply from Wladimir Palant:

1.2.2 works perfectly fine for me in 4.0b6pre and as far as I know 1.3a doesn’t have any important compatibility fixes that didn’t go into 1.2.2 as well. But, whatever…

I’m using Adblock 1.2.2 with FFx 3.6.8 on Xubuntu 10.04. Since I last updated, every time I try to right-click on a script (such as Google Reader) FFx crashes. Surfing with Adblock disabled (which I despise doing, since it is a great piece of software!) halts this problem. Previously everything worked correctly. Any ideas?

    Reply from Wladimir Palant:

There is very little I can do about crashes, they are generally not the fault of Adblock Plus even if Adblock Plus happens to trigger them. However, with a crash report (http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Firefox+crashes#Getting_help_with_your_crash) I could point you into the right direction. Unfortunately, I’m not sure you can get a crash report if you are running Ubuntu’s distribution-supplied Firefox – and chances are that the official Firefox builds don’t even have this issue (wouldn’t be the first time).

AdBlock Plus (with Firefox v3.6.8 on Windows 7 Home Prof) is a great program and was working OK until a few days ago.
    It stopped blocking ads.
I tried to fix it by clicking the Options button.
This crashed AdBlock and Firefox, and I had to stop the program using Windows Task Manager.
Tried Disable—>Close Firefox—>Open Firefox. No change to AdBlock (did not disable)
Tried Uninstall—>Close Firefox—>Open Firefox. Did not uninstall.
Tried downloading AdBlock and reinstalling. Could not complete the installation.
Tried Windows System Restore to the day before AdBlock failed. Could not complete the System Restore.

How can I remove it from my system and start again?

I think this is the problem: http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Unable+to+install+add-ons#Corrupt_extension_files

As to removing Adblock Plus, it works the usual way: http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Uninstalling+add-ons

Oh, and do you happen to have Personas Plus 1.6 installed? This might also be the reason – this version was severely broken, you should reinstall version 1.5.3 from https://addons.mozilla.org/addon/10900/.

    Reply from Wladimir Palant:

Try the easy solution – update Minefield. The bug you are talking about was fixed several days ago.
