Adblock Plus and (a little) more

New Release: Adblock Plus 3.9 · 2020-07-09 15:32 by Anna Fediaieva

Adblock Plus 3.9 for Chrome, Firefox, Opera and Edge is here!

What has changed?
Don’t worry, nothing about the way your favorite ad blocker works has changed. It’s still there to help you have a clean, annoyance-free internet experience.

However, we are always improving and expanding wherever we can.

Firstly, we are bringing back a cool feature. Starting today, you can share the number of ads you’ve blocked to your social media accounts.
Just think about it: hundreds, thousands, millions of intrusive ads that you didn’t see! Can you imagine trying to read the news, shop, use social media between all those ads without an ad blocker?

You can now let your friends know how clean your internet is, and it’s so easy to do!

Okay, but what else has been improved in the new version?

1. We are introducing the new updates page, meaning that from now on you can easily get familiar with all our new features and improvements via the ABP taskbar icon.

2. The data corruption notification has been moved to the background. Should your ABP settings become corrupted due to a browser issue, the notification message now opens in a new browser tab.

3. The dev tool panel is now less frustrating, making our power users’ lives a little easier. Long filters can now be viewed in their entirety, including the CSS selector.

4. The ABP taskbar icon notifications are more obvious and distinguishable: the icon now blinks and turns blue. In a nonintrusive way, of course. When you see your ABP icon turning blue – that’s how you know there is something new and interesting waiting for you.

Hello and thank you for ABP 3.9. We have been ABP users for at least 10+ years. You make a good product and care about the end user.
    1) why is it so hard to update filters? With the old 2.9, one could right click the ABP icon and choose subscriptions, that would open, then ctl-shft-t would update them all. Now it is hard to manually update subscriptions (we tend to get update failures.)
2)what is the blue circle with a heart in it on the lower right side in extensions (of ABP)?? Hovering over it does not show any url or information.

    Thank you again.

    Reply from Thomas Greiner:

    Thank you for your support!

    1) Version 3.0 was the first version of the extension that was based on Mozilla’s web extensions system, for which we had to abandon our existing Firefox codebase (check out our release notes and release announcement for more information on that). You can still manually update all filter lists via the "Update all filter lists" button in the Advanced tab of the settings page. But I can understand that it requires a few more clicks now to get there so I’ve now created ui#816 to look into reintroducing that shortcut as well as other ways that could speed up that user flow again.

    2) It just displays options for supporting Adblock Plus. Currently, it contains links to rate the extension in the various stores but we’re also going to use it for other options, such as a link to our donations page. I agree that we should add a tooltip to it though so I’ve created ui#817 for that.

Feel free to follow along in those GitLab issues to help us make the right improvements.
