Adblock Plus and (a little) more

Firefox 4 is there! · 2011-03-22 19:05 by Wladimir Palant

And since there are not enough blog posts about Firefox 4 on Planet, I am going to remind you that Firefox 4 is available now and you should go get it while it is hot. Seriously, do it. Lots of work went into this release and Firefox 4 is a huge step forward.

In case you were wondering, you can continue using Adblock Plus. The current version will work just fine, except for a keyboard shortcut that conflicts with Panorama. On Friday we are releasing Adblock Plus 1.3.5 which will fix this issue (along with other improvements).

Update (2011-03-23): One day after the release glow.mozilla.org still shows Firefox 4 as being downloaded more than 100 times per second. The arc chart is particularly interesting (click in the lower left corner to bring it up). Right now it shows Europe as being responsible for almost half of all the downloads. If you zoom in you see that the country with most downloads in Europe is Germany. Zoom in again and it shows you that Nordrhein-Westfalen is the German county with most downloads. Now one more click and we can congratulate the most Firefox-affine city in the world* — Köln (Cologne) where I happen to live in. I guess my wife’s Firefox evangelism paid off :-)

* Just joking, I know that the US has a dozen cities with higher download counts. Not to mention that Berlin’s download numbers are also significantly higher — but it doesn’t happen to be located in a county with very high population numbers. But plurality voting is good enough for US so…

Adblock Plus is the only extension needed ;-)
    Thank you

Firefox 4 shows the message that the current version of Adblock Plus can not be installed. :(
    Wait for friday? :)
Adblock Plus is super, and it’s very necessary!

    Reply from Wladimir Palant:

That’s probably because you have JavaScript disabled.

Well now that IE9 is considered a modern browser to many (saw your post to IE7 users), do you think there can be an AdBlock Plus for IE9 users?

I looked through some of your recent posts and didn’t see anything mentioned about IE9, so that’s why I’m asking.

    Reply from Wladimir Palant:

No, as much as Microsoft would like to declare it as such, IE9 is not a modern browser, it still has a lot to catch up. As far as extensions goes – nothing changed at least since IE6. See also https://adblockplus.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=7156.

@Quikboy: I have released an ad-blocking IE9 TPL based on EasyList some weeks ago, see www.quero.at

how can i enable javascript to avoid the problem described by number 2? thank you

    Reply from Wladimir Palant:

If you didn’t disable JavaScript or install NoScript then you don’t need to do it. Without really knowing what the problem is: http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Unable%20to%20install%20add-ons

Unfortunately, the problem with installing Adblock Plus for Firefox 4 not in the Javascript at the time of installation – it is included, as well as permission enabled for Firefox to install The Adblock Plus.
The installation begins, but at the end of the Firefox 4 reported that The Adblock Plus is not compatible with this version.

    Reply from Wladimir Palant:

If you install from https://addons.mozilla.org/addon/adblock-plus/ and JavaScript is enabled you should not get this message.

Firefox won’t let me install ABP either. I have JavaScript enabled and it says ABP is incompatible with FF4.

Alas, but even when Javascript is enabled, a new Firefox 4 (russian) completes the installation Adblock Plus, displaying the message: “Adblock Plus can not be established, because it is incompatible with Firefox 4.0” (here translated from russian).
Perhaps, this is due to localization(?), but, nevertheless, installation is not happening.

Oh well… I guess you will just have to wait until Friday.

I had this same problem so I manually downloaded the .xpi file and I had to modify the maximum version (it was set to 4.0b7).

Aha, I had no idea that you could zoom into the arc chart! I guess it hadn’t occurred to me to hover over the table, and there’s no cursor change over the chart :-(

    Reply from Wladimir Palant:

Yes, I had trouble finding it myself. I only found it because I guessed that the outer ark levels show further subdivision – and since hovering them still shows only “Europe” there must be some other way to get detailed data on Europe.

adblock plus prevents page header and folder names and compose button from showing on firefox 4 gmail page. If i turn off adblock everything is ok

    Reply from Wladimir Palant:

You need to update your filter subscriptions, this issue has been resolved a while ago. Please click Adblock Plus icon, choose “Preference” from the menu. In the Preferences window go to menu Filters and click “Update all filter subscriptions”.

    ABP 1.3.3 not compatible with FF4 :(

    “Reply from Wladimir Palant:

Oh well… I guess you will just have to wait until Friday.”

What’s coming on Friday? a fix? a new version?

    Reply from Wladimir Palant:

A new version. Adblock Plus 1.3.3 is compatible with Firefox 4 but the extension itself isn’t marked as such – Firefox 4 wasn’t out when it was released. Addons.mozilla.org has current compatibility information and usually installing from there works – for some people it doesn’t however, for whatever reason. Before we spend hours trying to figure out why that is, wait until Adblock Plus 1.3.5 is released tomorrow, it will be marked as compatible with Firefox 4 both on addons.mozilla.org and in the extension itself.

Updated to Firefox 4 last night & at first AdBlock Plus was working fine . . . then suddenly if I click on “Open blockable items” nothing appears (on any page). I had disabled it on a specific page, but did NOT disable it altogether. I can’t figure out why it’s not working.

adblock plus slows firefox down https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/performance/#addon-11

well that list seems biased. abp might slow down start up but it blocks ads so it speeds up browsing. Suprised downloadstatusbar is there.
