Adblock Plus and (a little) more

Adblock Plus is most used extension · 2007-09-17 13:13 by Wladimir Palant

Justing Scott (aka fligtar, one of addons.mozilla.org developers) published interesting numbers in his blog. In addition to the (inherently unreliable) download numbers for extensions we now also have the numbers of active users to compare. Actually, they are not really user numbers, but at least Mozilla knows how often it received update requests for which extensions — and that’s good enough to compare relative usage.

Guess what — Adblock Plus is first both by active users and in the category “Facebook Favorites”. Which means that it is not only used by many people, but that people also like it and want to share. Nice to see this confirmed. Good to have reliable numbers — at least until somebody starts generating automated update requests, as happened with the downloads already. Sadly, some people really have to make themselves look better than they really are…

I was wondering how long this ad blocking could last – the whole internet economy is based upon advertisement… The paradox is that, in order to keep blocking ads, we need this not to become too democratic…

The internet is based on the will to share the information with other people – that’s how it started in universities around the world. Some people are able to collect some money selling ads, but it’s a privilege for them, not a right. It is our right, however, to see only the information we want to see. No one can force us to see something, it is just as bad as censorship when we are forbidden to see particular things. The ads have been too intrusive, too big, too flashy. Blocking them is the only reasonable response. We defend our rights, nothing more.
