Adblock Plus and (a little) more
Adblock Plus for Chrome development builds are now in Chrome Web Store · 2014-05-07 18:16 by Wladimir Palant
We implemented automatic upload of the Adblock Plus for Chrome development builds to Chrome Web Store which will become the primary source of the development builds now. What this means for you:
- If you already have the development build installed then nothing changes for you, you will simply get the updates from Chrome Web Store in future.
- If you don’t have the development build installed then feel free to do so now, it just got much simpler. See our development builds page for more information.
Note that the development builds currently aren’t listed in Chrome Web Store so you can only get there by following a link from this website. We are still debating whether it should stay that way.
Why this change had to be implemented: Chrome 35 which is to be released soon will disable extensions installed from third-party websites, the Chrome Web Store becomes the only allowed source of extensions for Google Chrome. This is the last of several steps in which Google locked down Chrome under the pretense of protecting users. Using Adblock Plus for Chrome development builds got increasingly complicated in the process. Unfortunately, installing historical development builds for regression testing is still an unsolved problem.

You can still install extensions from third-party sources in Chrome 35. But you have to launch Chrome with —enable-easy-off-store-extension-install and the extension needs to be manually enabled every time after you launched Chrome.
While this is highly inconvenient for our devbuild users, it is still good enough in order to test older development builds.
But maybe this will change in the future, and this wasn’t the last step yet, in which Google locked down Chrome.
